One month later, February 24th | 11:34 pm

— finally, the city that never sleeps — Joshua smiles excitedly, leaving his bags on the floor, looking at the starry sky.

I sigh, holding the backpack strap to my shoulder, looking at the beautiful building in front of us. A beautiful place and close to college, something new and scary, but nothing I can't handle.

— shall we? — Ruby looks at me, smiling sideways.
I nod my head in agreement, following her steps into the building, coming across the entrance hall with a modern and chic decor.

I think it's a huge exaggeration, but I don't dare say anything, I know they are trying to do everything to make me happy and forget everything that happened. The two of them didn't let me choose something, so the apartments were chosen by them.

- Ruby, don't knock on my door at dawn! - Joshua looks at Ruby seriously, entering the elevator.

— and why would I do that? — she looks at him with disdain, turning her face away, throwing her hair in his face.

I let out a laugh, shaking my head, stopping in the corner of the elevator, waiting a little anxiously to see my new home.

When the doors open on the fifth floor, I can see the hallway in light tones and dark carpet on the floor, with small paintings decorating the walls.

Ruby and Joshua are the first to come out excited, talking and laughing as they get the apartments' access card. Still hesitant, I follow them in silence, looking at every minute detail of the corridor.

— see you later? — we looked at Joshua, who opened his door.

— of course — I say, taking the card, opening the door to my apartment.

I enter the place, admiring every detail. The room is very spacious and has white and gray tones, both on the walls and in the furniture. The balcony in front of the room is completely made of glass, giving a beautiful view of the illuminated buildings and the busy street.

Ruby made sure to choose one of the best apartments in New York, which has a perfect view of the city that never sleeps.

— I chose very well! — Ruby passes me, heading into the bedroom hallway.

I close the door behind me, walking slowly around the room, admiring every piece of furniture and painting in the place.

— Malia?! Your room is the last one in the hallway! — I hear
Ruby shouted, making me laugh softly, before heading out into the hallway.

The hallway is well lit, and has a dark carpet on the floor, and there are small pictures on the wall, between the four white doors.

The first door in the hallway is open, revealing a room in reddish tones and decorated just the way Ruby likes it. I pass by her room, looking at the last door in the hallway, going to it quickly, ignoring the other doors.

When I open the door, I find myself in a room in light tones. It is large, as is the double bed, which has a huge mirror that covers the entire wall behind it. The bedroom floor has a gray carpet, as do blackout curtains that run from ceiling to floor.

I sit on the bed, letting my backpack fall over my shoulder, looking at the big black TV hanging on the wall with an unlit LED below it. On that same wall, there are two doors, one on each side, which I think are the bathroom and the closet.

I breathe a sigh of relief when I remember that they were already bringing things here a week ago, so there's nothing to fix.
I get up, leaving my backpack on the corner of the bed, sighing heavily, taking the hoodie off my body, standing in front of the mirror.

A lump forms in my throat when I turn around and see the scar, which is now better. I run my finger over it, feeling my heart tighten and memories come flooding back.

The ringing of my cell phone wakes me up, making me pick it up from the bed, answering it without even looking at who it is.

-hello? — I sit on the bed, then throw myself back.

- longing? - the voice full of sarcasm on the other side makes me smile.

— not at all — I let out a low laugh, placing my hand on my stomach.

— should I trust, Baker? — I roll my eyes at her convinced tone.

— all right, Cantrall! I miss you so much...
— I speak quietly, looking at the white ceiling.

I haven't seen her since that event, and I miss her so much that it's strange.

— I heard that you've already arrived in your new apartment, do you like it? — I sigh, turning over onto my stomach.

— yeah, I liked it — I smile, twirling a curl around my finger.

— and is everything ok? — her question sounds curious, not in a formal way.

I frown, trying to understand the reason for her question. Would Ruby or Joshua have said something to her?

Okay, I'm very distant, far from the things I did before what happened. Everything seems so meaningless, so empty and distant, my mind tortures me, remembering all the torturous moments I've been through.

— Malia? — I stop thinking, listening to his soft voice again.

"It's okay," I say, swallowing hard.

The silence hovers and it's strange, it feels like everything is being left aside, everything is slowly cooling down, I feel like she's distant, calling once a week, always saying she's sorting out a lot of things in Canada.

This is frustrating, I confess, I miss when she was around, always finding a way to stay by my side, with her stupid teasing and unexpected affection.
— can I come in? — I hear the muffled voice on the other side of my bedroom door.

- You can! — I say loudly, feeling my stomach twist for no reason.

— I came to keep you company — Ruby enters and closes the door, smiling sideways. -

— I need it — I murmur, looking at my hands.

— I'll let you go and rest — Kylie says on the other end of the line, making me snort.

It's always been like this lately. It's always "I'll let you rest", sometimes I think she wants to
to walk away for good, for the simple fact that you are tired.

- again... The next call is only next week... — I say in a low tone, choked by the lump that forms in my throat.

I feel like crying, letting it all out and saying that I really miss you, and that just one call a week isn't enough.

— don't cry... — her plea is low, but I ignore it, sitting on the edge of the bed, letting the call echo in the room.

Ruby sits next to me, hugging me in the corner, resting my head on her shoulder, stroking my hair.

Kylie is silent, but I can hear her heavy breathing and something being placed on a hard surface.

My vision is blurry, and my stomach is churning inside me. I look at the floor, feeling everything spinning and when I feel like everything is going to be thrown out, I break out of Ruby's grip, running to one of the doors, thankful it's the bathroom.

— Malia?! — I hear Ruby scream from inside the room, but I ignore it, opening the toilet, kneeling in front of it, putting everything I ate on the trip outside.

I take a deep breath, resting my head on my arm, feeling everything spinning around me. I can hear Ruby talking to Kylie, in a low tone.

— I don't know, Kylie! — She is nervous. — it's the second time, but it's been a long time — longer than what? - I don't fucking know! I don't understand about! — is the last thing she says.

Heavy silence hangs in the air, and within seconds I feel Ruby's presence behind me, holding my hair.

— Are you feeling very sick? — I raise my face, shaking her in denial. — we'll see that soon...
— she murmurs, helping me up.
