I stamp my foot on the ground, anxious and impatient because it takes so long for them to call my name. Ruby and Joshua are talking to the receptionist, as if they were long-time friends.
Vincent is slumped in the chair next to me, scrolling through his cell phone boredly, definitely wanting to leave as quickly as possible. It's just a few minutes before the appointment starts and I haven't even received a message from Kylie, this frustrates me and makes me afraid, afraid that she's really getting involved with that woman, and I can't even say anything, I'm not yours at all.
— Malia Baker? The doctor is waiting for you in room seven — the receptionist informs, looking at me kindly.I swallow hard, getting up from the chair, running my hand up my skirt, feeling my hands ring with nervousness.
— Do you want one of us to accompany you? — Joshua asks, next to Ruby.I open my mouth to say yes, since I won't be able to enter that room alone, but I am interrupted before I can speak by the voice that appeared at reception.
— don't even think! I'll go with her — I look back, seeing that Kylie has her arms crossed, approaching with agile steps.
— you like to show up unannounced — Ruby murmurs, drinking her water.
I ignore her existence and turn around, following the light and calm corridor, with small drawings involving motherhood on the wall.
When I stop in front of the door with the number seven, I freeze, but I feel someone touching my waist lightly and because of the strong perfume, I already know it's her.
- everything is fine? — she asks quietly and I swallow hard, not having the courage to look at her.
— yes — I say harshly, knocking on the door afterwards, hearing a low "come in" from the doctor.
I open the door calmly, entering the somewhat dark room, seeing that the woman with short, dark hair is sitting on the chair in front of the screens next to the stretcher. Kylie closed the door behind us, keeping her touch on me.
— Malia Baker? - She turns to me, smiling gently, putting on her white gloves. — and you are? — She closes her eyes towards Kylie, showing that she is trying to recognize her from somewhere.— Kylie Cantrall - Kylie speaks firmly, without smiling, just looking at her coldly as always.
-oh, yes, Kylie Cantrall - she smiles nervously, making me frown, not liking this reaction at all.
— you seem stressed, what happened? — Kylie asks in a low tone, pressing herself in front of me, running her thumb across my face.
I'm mad at her, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying her touch on me. I sigh, looking away from hers, still having the image of that woman literally thrown over her with an idiotic smile on her lips.
— nothing happened, Cantrall — I move away from her touch, sitting on the stretcher.
— You can lie down, Malia — the doctor says and I do so, lifting my blouse further, leaving my belly exposed.
Kylie stands next to the stretcher, with a neutral expression, staring at my belly.
— this gel is a little cold — she warns, laughing lightly, rubbing it over my belly, making me sigh with the cold sensation on me.
Silence hangs in the air and out of nervousness I hold Kylie's hand, biting my lower lip, looking at her, who keeps her gaze fixed on the screen in front of her.
She squeezes my hand, showing that she is by my side, making me feel more relieved, allowing me to look at the screen.
The doctor passes the device over my belly, moving from corner to corner, looking at the screen, which shows a blur that I can't identify at all. The doctor smiles, and little by little the image takes shape, revealing a small baby, slowly forming. My heart races and my body freezes when I see this scene, feeling strange.
