I had lowered the food into Berilos and Kori's enclosure and Masrani and Owen came up to me. I don't know how he got here but I wasn't about to ask, Masrani spoke first.
"Control your animals," he told me and I instantly knew he was referring to yesterday when my boys killed the ACU members.
"My boys have figured out how much stronger they are than people," I glared at Owen and Masrani. "I can't control if they decide to test out their strength on men that were threatening their peace."
"People have died, Miss Wood," Masrani said sternly.
"I know, I was there, what do you expect me to do? March in there and demand they throw them up?" I snap back. It was still a touchy topic since it was so fresh.
"I expect you to make sure it never happens again," Masrani said coldly and strictly.
"Any tips or..." I look at him innocently.
"The fence is growing too small for the rexes," Owen said, his eyes looking over the fence. "It's only a matter of time before they attempt to climb it."
"It's electric," I fold my arms across my chest.
"So were the tasers but they barely harm the hybrids anymore," Owen countered. He was right.
"How do you suggest we move the hybrids?" Masrani asks, looking more nervous and serious.
"Tranquilisers and a helicopter," I suggest remembering how we used to transport crocodiles at my parents' crocodile farm. It should work for Berilo and Kori.
"That's not a bad idea," Owen nodded at me.
I smiled proudly at his praise.
I went into the paddock and me and the rexes went to the lake, I watched as they dove in the water and swam around happily but at the end of the day they crawled out of the water, their scales making the water drip off them easily so they were dry by the time they reached my under the shady tree.
"Hey, my boys!" I coo.
Berilo let out a low rumbly trill that almost sounded like he was saying 'heyyy'.
That warmed my heart, I sat down on the grass and he lay his massive head that was almost as big as my body on my lap. I gave his head a rub and then Kori lay by me so I could rest my head against him.
Both of their scales were pretty cool from the water but they weren't even wet, it was crazy. Like duck feathers I guessed their scales being tough and smooth couldn't soak up any water. Or maybe they had oil on their scales?
Who knew?
I looked around at my boys, Kori's claws resting a metre or two away from my hand and I could see his claws and fingers were about the length of my forearm. His claws were webbed with his green rubbery fins.
His torso, or barrel, as horse people would call it, was about the size of a hay bale, he was on the skinnier side. Berilo was a bit bulkier but I was less scared of Berilo since the shift in power dynamics when Kori became the unspoken leader.
Berilo let out a rumbly purr as I scratched at the spot between his nostrils. He leaned into my hand which was under a lot of pressure so my hand was pushed back.
"Aww, who's my big puppy-dog?" I coo and scratch as hard as humanly possible.
He lets out a low growl of satisfaction.
I move out from under him and climb onto his neck, he lets out a chirp of surprise. I scratch under his chin where his head connects with his neck. He lets out another low growl. This time one of his back legs kicked like an excited puppy-dog.
He half stood up and I let out an excited squeal but kept working my hands under his chin.
Good thing I had trained horses before and knew what to do when I was a few feet off the ground. I moved one hand up slowly scratching to his cheek and he turned his head to the side to lean into my touch.
"Good boy," I then sat up, adjusting my position on his smooth scales. It was hard to stay on him since his scales were so smooth.
I held on with my knees I knew I would be sore in the morning since I hadn't done this before but I didn't see a clear way down and I had missed the feeling of riding.
Berilo let out a curious chitter as he tilted his head trying to look at me. Kori had stood up too, looking at me with his head tilted as if he half understood what I was doing.
Berilo stood up to his full height, which meant I was at least 6 metres from the ground which was a height I had never experienced before on an animal and I held on tighter.
It was weird how I kind of felt both safe and unsafe up here, a saddle would really make it better. I'd probably have to keep this a secret from Dr Wu and everyone else I work with because they probably wouldn't approve.
I leaned forward and Berilo moved forward before I could even kick my legs. He headed towards the lake and my eyes widened. I didn't want to go into the murky abyss with him. I didn't even have goggles.
I leaned backwards but Berilo didn't stop.
His feet began to wade into the water and I slid backwards, backing into his rubbery fin on his back. "Berilo, stop." I said firmly.
He stopped and looked back at me.
I didn't know how to get down. I looked around, if he would just lower himself to the ground. "Can you crouch down?" I ask.
Not like he understood that, I saw Kori coming over, he looked at me on eye-level, tilting his head as if he held a bit of respect and curiosity. I reached my hand out and rubbed between his nostrils, like I had down with Berilo and Kori let out a small purr.
I got an idea, "can you help me get down?" I asked, he didn't entirely understand what I was saying but with the context he had he pushed his muzzle into my belly.
I wrapped my arms around his head and he pulled me off Berilo and set me gently on the ground.
"Thank you, boy," I coo and give him a chin scratch.
I was beginning to regain a bit of control and respect among the ranks.
