TEAGAN LAY HALF buried under her duvet, trying to hang on to the last threads of sleep. sunlight streamed through her window, and her head was still hazy from the mindless fun of the night before, spent with johnny. it had been unexpectedly refreshing, a chance to unwind with someone who knew her past and her quirks. she had forgotten how easy it felt to laugh with him. it was clear they were still on the best of terms, and she was happy to see him back in her life, if only as a friend.
but the calm of the morning didn't last long. a loud banging shattered the quiet, making teagan groan and bury her face in her pillow.
"who is committing this act of violence at..." teagan mumbled into her pillow as squinted at the clock on her nightstand. "... 9 am?"
the banging grew louder and faster, each knock matching the rapid pace of her pulse as she jolted upright. there was only one person she knew who would bang on her door with the persistence of a battering ram.
with a groggy sigh, teagan dragged herself out of bed and shuffled to the door, muttering threats under her breath about what she was going to do to lena if this was some new prank.
sure enough, the door flew open, and in came lena, practically vibrating with excitement.
"you are not going to believe this." lena spoke, wide-eyed and breathless. teagan yawned, giving her best friend a sleepy, unamused look. "if it's not the end of the world, i'm going back to bed."
but lena ignored teagan's sleepy tone and shoved her phone into teagan's face. "oh, honey, you're definitely going to want to be awake for this."
teagan squinted at the screen, her brain still half-asleep, trying to make sense of the words in front of her. but then, in big, bold letters, she saw the headline.
