The bells ring softly but loudly, and Renar sighed.
'I hope His Grace hasn't gotten into trouble...' Renar looked around, now there were actually people getting inside the palace, he didn't think that in almost 2 hours no one would get inside, and here he thought he could already form some friendship in business.
'Sigh, guess I'll have to do that later on, or maybe send letters directly.' He got up from where he was sitting. 'They'll let me in first I hope...I'm Devland's secretary after all.'
Renar walked towards the huge door, but it was too late, he was overwhelmed by the people who suddenly came in, throwing themselves in line in front of the guards, to be identified.
"No way...!" He whispered desperately, walking, skipping the line in front of him. 'I absolutely can't waste time here, what do I do if His Grace gets pissed off by someone in the meantime?!'
People glared, but Renar definitely couldn't care about that.
"Guards. I am Renar Borgia." Renar said, showing them the badge with the symbol of the Grand Duchy on it, and silence fell, everyone took a step back from him, looking away.
The guards didn't ask anything else, they bowed and opened the door. "Lord Renar Borgia, His Grace's secretary, is here." The guards announced loudly.
'W...what?! Why did they shout it?' Renar walks into the large hall. 'Ugh, so embarrassing!'
Everyone stared at him, this was most likely because the dozens of people were accustomed to the other three secretaries.
Renar curtsied, the first person to whom he had to pay his respect even without being approached was one. "Blessing and glory be upon the Sun of the Empire, His Majesty the Emperor."
'Wow, Edward is so pretty, no wonder he makes Catherine's heart beat! What an elegant aura!' Renar couldn't help but think of that long blonde hair. 'Really, he's exactly how I imagined him.'
Edward stared at him, the air was heavy. Now Renar didn't dare breathe, he could feel it, Devland and Edward exuded a frightening aura.
'Your Grace...please don't tell me you pissed off the Emperor after everything I did to make you a little more normal!'
However upon his arrival, Devland calmed down again, it was so sudden that Edward's eyes widened.
He looked at Renar, raising his hand, giving permission to stand. "So you're Devland's new secretary."
"Yes, Your Majesty." Renar said, voice calm, standing up. There was a moment of awkward silence.
'So...what do we do now? I don't think I can say anything else?'
Devland walked towards Renar. "Ren, you've arrived." He said, directly in front of him. Renar flinched.
'Hey...what are you doing? I can't see the Emperor! I'll be thought of as rude and impertinent like that!'
But he had no choice, either he ignored Devland and gave his regards to the Emperor, or he ignored the Emperor and bowed to Devland.
Both options were deadly, but he had no choice but to follow etiquette. He curtsied again.
"Ah, yes, forgive my impertinence, greetings—"
"Let's go." Devland said, walking away. Renar's eyes opened wide.
'Gah, wait for me!' Renar immediately turned to the Emperor, curtsying yet another time. "It was an honor meeting His Majesty the Emperor—"
"Renar, I said let's go." Devland repeats, cutting him off.
Edward sighed heavily, even he had pity for Devland's secretaries, so he shook his hand, dismissing him.
Renar sighed in relief, getting up again and following Devland. 'Edward is so merciful, I wonder why Devland hates him so much, other than because of their positions.'
Devland stopped towards a table and sat down, Renar stood next to him, a little further back. Slowly, the other guests entered after being identified.
'How boring...' Renar sighed silently.
"Are you by any chance tired?" Devland broke the silence.
Renar tensed. "Of course not, Your Grace, sorry for my less than decorous behavior."
Devland chuckled. 'Always the answer ready...' He thought, amused. "Go and ask a servant for a glass of water, I'm thirsty."
"Immediately, Your Grace." Renar walked away, looking for a servant. 'I'm getting too daring, I have to pay attention.'
Maybe it was because after so many years Devland brought along someone different, but everyone was secretly staring at him. Renar had the appearance of a serious and resolute man, he gave off a very mature aura.
'The first dance is about to begin...I know His Grace will never dance, but it would be better if—'
"Greetings Lord Renar." A sweet, shy voice spoke. Renar was surprised and immediately turned his gaze, a Lady was in front of him.
Renar bowed and smiled kindly. "Greetings, Lady Delilah, what can I do for you?"
'How cute, she reminds me of my little sister Luna, she was always quite shy. But well...she is the daughter of Marquis Escobar, one of the few guests admitted to the main ceremony.'
She blushed. "Lord Renar, would you grant me the first dance?" She asked, voice shaking a little, the other Ladies behind her giggled excitedly.
'A dance huh...isn't she a little too young to ask me? She looks like a sixteen year old at most.' He was quite perplexed. 'Yet again, it's not that strange here, considering that at sixteen you're already considered an adult.'
He gently took her hand in his, kissing it. "Of course, I would be honored."
The Lady blushed deeply. "No, the honour is all mine."
He internally chuckled. 'Yes, if I refused I would have embarrassed her, I can't have that happening to such a young girl.'
Renar escorted her to the dance floor, the music was about to start. The two bowed, and Renar first took the Lady's hand on his and then gently placed his hand on her waist, being that it was a waltz.
The music started, and they started dancing.
The Lady was a little anxious and accidentally stepped on Renar's foot. "Oh, oh my! Forgive me! I didn't mean to—!"
Renar lowered his head slightly, his head next to her ear. "Don't worry Lady Delilah, your steps are as graceful as a butterfly's." He whispered calmly.
She sighed in relief, she felt so calm now. The dance ended well, the two bowed again and Renar escorted her to the other Ladies, probably her friends.
"It was an honor to share this first dance, Lady Delilah, now I shall take my leave." Renar said, walking away.
'Crap! I totally forgot about Devland!' Now he was in total panic.
He walked quickly to where Devland was sitting, and Renar gulped at the sight. 'God, have mercy.'
Devland was face to face with the Emperor, looking pissed off.
