"Your Grace, I know well the values of this–!"

Devland stopped him from speaking, cutting and causing a deeper cut on Renar's throat.

He could no longer speak for a moment, only a week had passed since he came there and he already felt lost.

'He will never trust me if I don't prove that I truly want to be useful to the Grand Duchy, I was foolish to assume that I would earn his trust over time, Why am I acting like I'm not aware of his personality in the novel? Why am I constantly giving myself unrealistic ideas?'

Renar was really frustrated with himself, up until that point, he lied to himself to feel better, to ease his guilt.

'I know that what I said is considered deadly here, but if I want to change the future, I can't afford to consider the people here one-dimensional. I'm not interacting with artificial people, they are all real, from head to toe. I was too influenced by the novel.'

He knew he was inside the world he read about before he died, but until that day, he simply took it for granted that the people around him were mere characters, but now he realized it was the opposite.

Renar also knew that throughout his generations, the Mors family firmly believed that the Grand Duchy did not need anyone to help protect or save them.

So basically Renar insulted his new boss' entire family tree, knowing he could easily get killed on the spot.

But now he didn't really have a choice, with someone like Devland there was nothing he could do in a situation like this, unless it was to confess most of his goal immediately.

'I mean, obviously the Grand Duchy of Mors has connections, but they have all been created by the Imperial family, since they are blood related, but it's as if they don't exist to Devland.'

"Your Grace, what I mean is that the Grand Duchy needs more support." He remarks.

"Renar Borgia, do you even know what you're talking about?" Devland asked with a scoff.

Renar looked at him intently, "Yes, and I can prove it to you, Your Grace. If you give me a chance to be by your side, I will truly make you untouchable."

Those connections would be more than useful in the future, if the Mors family had more people to support and foster them, then it would be easier to develop a better Devland, to make him develop some real social skill, some empathy. After all his goal was to save all the hard working people within the residence, the main characters, and himself.

'He has to become one who is able to finally understand his few limits! This isn't mere novel's information, everyone knows that Grand Duke is highly antisocial, especially with those he should be allied with!'

Devland continued to stare at him, he did look angry, he could kill him anytime if he wanted to, but he decided to give him a chance to save himself, because he recognized his skills. "By my side?"

He gulped, he thought of it as a fortunate opportunity to explain most of his goal. "If I could take more care of Your Grace's time and socializing, I would not fail to make the mighty Grand Duchy stronger!"

"I'm not asking about your goals, but why do this?" Devland asked coldly. "Everyone knows you were here to fill a role temporarily, until I had to kick you out or kill you for incompetence. But you demonstrated genius' skills, making you suspicious. Yet, knowing you might die, you boldly claimed you want to make this family stronger, risking your life and your family's. Why?"

Renar gulped. 'If I could only tell him the truth without sounding like a degenerate, I would have done so already, but I don't have that luxury, my dear Devland!'

But still, he did some mental self-courage and opened his mouth to speak. "Money."

Devland expected some long response, with Renar climbing the walls to create something believable, but instead this direct response left him a little surprised, he didn't exactly believe him, but the answer was reasonable enough.

Still he couldn't help the his urges. "So life is less important to you than money? I thought yours was an artistic family." He said, creepy smile creeping out again.

"No, Your Grace, but as you already know, I have nothing to my name, what is a life with nothing to own?"

Devland withdrew his sword and laughed, catching Renar's chin in his hands. "Okay, that's enough. I can accept your explanations for now, but you'll have to be a handyman for as long as I want to, and then I'll decide if you are capable of what you just said. But keep in mind this: you just shared a goal that went against my and my family's beliefs, so, I won't be sparing you, like today, if I see something that I won't like."

Renar nodded. 'Thank goodness! Actually, I don't think he believed my answer, since it wouldn't even make sense, but who cares, if I keep him entertained I'll be able to survive and achieve my goal.'

"Good, now get out, you survived for today thanks to your big tongue and you better remember that, Renar." He said, sending him off.

"Of course, Your Grace." He bowed, and left without hesitation.

It had ended better than expected, but Renar could no longer rely on the novel for his work, since everything he knows is from 3 years later.

'This decision of mine to rush things will lead to huge changes to the main story. I have to start planning everything right away, so after the months of testing, I'll be ready.'

He walked towards the three secretaries. "I'm back."

"Renar, you're alive!" Adam exclaimed.

Claude looked satisfied, "You did a good job, what position did he assign you?"

"My position will remain unsettled for a few more months." He announced.

The three were certainly surprised, growing up with Devland, they knew his way of doing things quite well.

'He would never leave a person in a precarious position, he can't stand things that aren't perfect.' Jett thought, looking at Renar suspiciously.

Renar sensed this, and decided to ignore it, "I'll take my leave now. Good night."

The three said goodnight, and Renar entered his room. He sat down, and prepared pen and paper, ready to get a clear idea of who he should focus on as soon as Devland will officially accept him. He needed to judge who was useful and who was useless, and above all, the traitors.

'Torture and executing, it is not strange for Devland to torture and them kill traitors, no matter what is their status. In the Empire this isn't common, so it has always been seen as savage and cruel.'

He obviously had the goal of changing the treatment and consequences of every single ally, traitor or not.

'But above all, I need to find more allies for Devland, make the first move towards someone outside of those selected by the Imperial family.'

Renar knew it would be a long and hard process, but he had nothing else to aim for, nothing that could improve Devland's position in the novel other than this.

"I will come up with the most perfect plan possible!" He was now more determined to change.
