It was just another boring fucking day at the institute, another endless pile of paper work, meetings, and reports. I was sitting at my desk sifting through supply orders for district five and ten, trying to focus on the endless stacks that only seemed to grow no matter how much I worked.
I couldn't fucking focus, though—my mind kept drifting to Penelope. She'd run off, and though I knew she wasn't okay, It didn't make work exactly easier. The silence in the office felt heavy without her. I felt lonely without her.
Cassandra, a brontokinetic (thunder manipulation) stood nearby waiting of me to finish the paperwork infront of me. I hand her a stack of finished papers without looking. "Can you take care of these?" I ask, my voice flat.
"Of course," she replied immediately, taking them without hesitation.
I slouched in my chair, staring at the papers infront of me. Penelope was gone, and I couldn't stop wondering when—or If—I'd see her again. I rubbed my eyes, exhausted. All I wanted was her, all I needed was her. God—I'm so lonely that I am practically turning depressed.
Cassandra returned with a few more documents.
"Anything else, commander?"I sighed—my eye twitching at the sight of more papers. "I'm going to the gym. Need to blow off some steam."
She nodded respectfully and stepped aside with no hesitation.
'"Take care."The gym wasn't much better, but at least I could work off some of the frustration. I'd practically come here every two hours, every goddam day. I wrapped my boxing gloves and headed to the ring, but then immediately coming to a stop as I saw her.
Gabriella Martinez?
She was completely slumped in the corner, It almost looked as If she'd been attacked— For a second, panic hit me—was she unconscious? I rushed over, kneeling down infront of her. Only to find her asleep, breathing steady.
Relief washed over me as I breathed out In relief, but It doesn't do much to ease the ache in my chest.I nudge at Gabriella lightly, the least I could do was take care of Penelope's friends while she was gone.
