Fear in the shadows

The Quinjet landed smoothly at the private resort, the sun setting behind the mountains, casting an orange glow over the pristine waters. Tony and Steve stepped out, exhausted but relieved that the immediate threat had been neutralized. They had been looking forward to returning to the peace they had left behind.

Instead, what greeted them was anything but calm.

The atmosphere in the main villa was thick with tension. Everyone was gathered in the living area, their faces pale and eyes wide with unease. Wade, Ned, Harley, and Morgan were huddled together on the couch, their arms wrapped tightly around each other. In the corner, Peter sat with MJ, his arms protectively around her as she clung to him.

The sight of their children and friends visibly shaken made Steve’s heart ache. Tony’s jaw tightened, his sharp eyes immediately scanning for any sign of danger.

“What happened here?” Steve asked, his voice calm but firm, stepping further into the room.

Morgan looked up, her usually bright face now etched with fear. “Dad… Pops… someone was here.”

“What do you mean, ‘someone was here’?” Tony demanded, his voice rising slightly as he moved toward them.

Peter, still holding MJ close, answered, his tone serious. “While you were gone, someone tried to break into the villa.”

“What?” Tony’s voice was sharp now, filled with both anger and worry. He turned to F.R.I.D.A.Y. “Why wasn’t I notified? How did this happen under our security?”

F.R.I.D.A.Y.’s voice came through, calm but apologetic. “Sir, the intruder used highly advanced scrambling technology to bypass initial detection. I managed to alert the villa’s defenses in time to scare them off, but they left no trace behind.”

“They didn’t get in,” MJ added quickly, sensing Tony’s growing frustration. “But they tried. And whoever they were, they weren’t amateurs.”

Steve knelt in front of Morgan and Harley, his presence a calming one. “Are you all okay? Did anyone get hurt?”

“No,” Harley said, his voice steady but low. “We locked everything down and stuck together. But… it was scary.”

Morgan nodded, her voice trembling. “They were watching us, Pops. I could feel it.”

Tony placed a hand on his daughter’s shoulder, his voice softening. “You’re safe now. I promise.” He looked at Peter, who was still holding MJ. “And you? You okay, kid?”

Peter’s jaw tightened. “I’m fine. But they knew what they were doing. They weren’t here to rob us—they were looking for something. Or someone.”

Steve exchanged a glance with Tony. The implications were clear: Hydra, or one of their affiliates, was likely behind this.

“What did they want?” Steve asked, his tone grave.

“We don’t know,” Peter replied. “But if they were connected to Hydra…” He trailed off, his Spidey-senses tingling even as he sat there.

Tony ran a hand through his hair, his frustration boiling over. “They’ve already crossed the line once today. Now they’re coming after my family?” His voice grew sharper. “I’ll make them regret it.”

Steve placed a calming hand on Tony’s arm. “We’ll deal with this, but first, let’s make sure everyone is safe and secure. We need to regroup.”

Peter stood up, gently helping MJ to her feet. “I reinforced the villa’s security system after F.R.I.D.A.Y. gave me the alert. Whoever they are, they won’t get through now.”

Tony gave Peter an approving nod. “Good work, kid.”

Morgan stood and moved toward Tony, wrapping her arms around him tightly. “Dad, I don’t want to lose you or Pops. You promise you’ll stay safe?”

Tony knelt and hugged her back, his voice soft but firm. “I promise, baby shark. No one’s going to take us away from you.”

Steve joined the hug, placing a reassuring hand on Morgan’s back. “You’re our priority, always.”

Peter and MJ exchanged a look, and Peter spoke up. “We should stick together for now. If Hydra’s making moves, they won’t stop here.”

Tony straightened, his resolve clear. “Then we’ll be ready for them. No one messes with my family and gets away with it.”

Steve nodded in agreement. “We’ll keep watch tonight and start planning tomorrow. Whatever their endgame is, we’ll stop it.”

The group slowly began to settle down, the tension easing slightly but not disappearing entirely. Even as the night fell over the resort, a lingering sense of unease remained.

Tony and Steve stayed awake, keeping vigil as their family rested, both silently vowing to protect what mattered most—no matter the cost.
