Pansy's knees were pulled up to her chest, arms on top of her knees as she hid her face in the crook of her elbow. Each of her breaths were rasping gasps in her ears, and she shook as adrenaline drained from her.

She was alive.

The Dark Lord was dead and so were a lot of people she knew.

She had the chance to leave Hogwarts and save her own skin, but in the confusion as Potter and his friends arrived, as the Death Eaters stormed, as she made sure the first years left, she had stayed behind.

Pansy raised her head at the sound of dirt and dust crunching underfoot. She knew her face was streaked with dirt and sweat, hair a disgusting mess, and school uniform ripped, but she was in better shape than Luna Lovegood.

There were dark circles under Luna's eyes. Her dirty blonde hair was on the side of dirty rather than blonde and there was blood on her clothes. Her face was gaunt like she hadn't eaten properly in a while, skin paler than it was usually, and Pansy wasn't sure if that was the from the battle, the lack of sunlight, or something else.

Despite how ragged Luna looked, she still smiled at Pansy. She sat down and shuffled closer. They were almost touching; a few centimetres was all that separated them. Luna lifted her right arm and a shaking sob rose to Pansy's throat. She turned into the comfort that Luna gave so freely and easily, as if they hadn't been on opposite sides just hours before.

'It's all right,' whispered Luna into Pansy's hair, arms wrapped tightly around her. 'You'll be all right.'

For the first time in Pansy's life, she started to believe that it could be the truth.
