Through love and war, only we stand unfazed...for our love is far greater than all...
Devon
The following days felt like a whirlwind of strategizing and planning. Jenna and I worked late into the night, poring over the evidence on the flash drive and figuring out the best way to deliver it to the police without drawing Julian’s attention. Her resourcefulness was impressive; she had contacts in the area and knew how to navigate the streets better than I ever could.
Finally, after days of waiting and watching, we settled on a plan. We’d deliver the flash drive to an officer who had a reputation for being clean and trustworthy—a detective named Samuels. I knew he’d be our best shot at making sure the evidence didn’t disappear into a black hole.
On the day of the meeting, I felt the weight of anxiety pressing down on me. I was still nursing bruises and cuts, but the bandages Jenna had applied made me feel a little less like a walking target. We parked a few blocks from the police station, the nerves dancing in my stomach as I held the flash drive tightly in my hand.
“Are you ready for this?” Jenna asked, glancing at me with a determined look in her eyes.
“As ready as I’ll ever be,” I replied, forcing a confident smile. “Let’s do this.”
We stepped out of the car, moving quickly but cautiously toward the station. My heart raced as we walked through the entrance, the air inside thick with tension. I spotted Detective Samuels at the front desk, reviewing some paperwork. He looked up, his eyes meeting mine, and nodded as I approached.
“Devon,” he said, his tone serious. “I got your message. You found something?”
“Yes,” I said, keeping my voice steady. “But I need to talk to you privately.”
He glanced around, ensuring no one was listening, then motioned for us to follow him down a narrow hallway to an empty conference room. Once inside, I felt a mix of relief and anxiety. I knew I was about to hand over the evidence that could change everything.
“Okay, what do you have?” Detective Samuels asked, leaning against the table, arms crossed.
I took a deep breath, holding out the flash drive. “This contains everything you need to bring down Julian Marcinos—financial records, photos, transactions. I’ve spent months gathering this information, and I know it’ll prove he’s been running a criminal enterprise.”
Samuels took the drive and plugged it into his laptop, his eyes scanning the screen as he browsed through the files. I could see the tension in his shoulders begin to ease. “This... this is significant. If this checks out, we can move on him. But you need to understand the risks involved, especially if Julian finds out you’re the one who gave this to us.”
“I know,” I replied, my heart pounding. “But he’s hurt too many people. He can’t keep getting away with it.”
Samuels nodded, glancing at Jenna, who stood quietly beside me, her arms crossed. “You’re brave for doing this, both of you. But you need to lay low. I’ll do everything I can to protect your identities.”
“Thank you,” I said, relief flooding through me. “We just want to see him brought to justice.”
As we wrapped up our meeting, I felt a weight lift off my shoulders. The hard part was done, but now we needed to disappear again, at least for a while, until the police could act on the information we’d provided.
Back in the car, Jenna turned to me, her eyes bright with excitement. “We did it! We actually did it, Devon!”
I couldn’t help but smile, the adrenaline still coursing through my veins. “Yeah, we did. But it’s not over yet. Julian will come after us, and we need to be ready.”
