Take us on your journey: What sparked the bold transition from crafting paranormal tales to weaving dark Christian romances? How did your creative path evolve to embrace this new genre, and what inspired you to explore the complex intersection of faith and darkness?
Ah, Anna, it's ironic you asked, because the tale of how I transitioned to dark Christian romance is indeed long and winding! It all started two years ago, in August, when I found myself reeling from a painful ghosting experience with someone, I had strong feelings for. To make matters more intense, I had just returned from a five-day vacation, and the juxtaposition of that relaxing getaway with the harsh reality of heartache sparked a creative shift within me...
To be honest, I'm not fond of reflecting on my past as a paranormal author, not because I wasn't successful - I actually excelled, winning numerous awards. However, the reason I rarely discuss that period is because I disliked the person I became during that time. I was consumed by negativity, marked by jealousy, pride, and a hardened heart. These traits stemmed from my own inner turmoil and unhappiness. I was miserable, and as the saying goes, 'misery likes company.' I didn't want to spread that darkness, so I've kept that chapter of my life private.
I don't recall the exact day I stopped writing paranormal fiction, but I remember the prolonged period of creative dormancy that followed. Weeks turned into months, and my writing came to a standstill. I was consumed by depression, frustrated that my books weren't gaining the traction I had hoped for. Meanwhile, I watched as other authors, who wrote for the joy of it, saw their careers soar. It was a painful contrast to my own struggles, as I had been pouring my heart and soul into writing as a career. Reflecting on that challenging time, I realize that God lovingly nudged me toward a new path - writing Christian romances. It felt like a leap of faith at the time, but in hindsight, I see His gentle guidance. I was fearful of failure and apprehensive about starting anew, leaving behind three years of writing paranormal fiction. Yet, with trepidation, I stepped into this uncharted territory, trusting that God's plan was unfolding.
And unfold it did...
God has a way of aligning opportunities, and that's exactly what happened when I abandoned my first Christian romance novel and stumbled upon a Christian writing contest. The contest's premise was simple yet intriguing: three weeks, three Bible verses, and three short stories. This challenge birthed the first three chapters of To Know You, which unexpectedly earned me a top-three spot with each submission. Initially, I envisioned To Know You as a collection of short stories inspired by Bible verses, but as the weeks passed, a burning desire to develop the book further took hold. I started writing Chapter One, and the words flowed effortlessly, as if my soul was both speaking and listening. Before I knew it, the story was complete, and the response was overwhelming. The vote count soared, and messages poured in from readers whose lives had been transformed by To Know You. Their gratitude and testimonials left me in awe, humbled by the realization that my writing had made a profound impact.
The most amusing aspect of my writing journey is that, for the first four years, I was oblivious to the fact that I was writing dark romances. Three years as a paranormal author and one year as a Christian romance author passed before I realized my stories had a darker tone. Although readers would mention the intense themes, no one explicitly labeled my work until my friend Natalia read 'To Know You' and jokingly needed therapy afterwards! She was the first to coin the term 'Dark Christian Romances' to describe my writing. I embraced the label and proudly own it to this day. My stories blend the intensity of dark romance with the redeeming power of Christian fiction, making them uniquely mine.
