"Alex? Is that you?" I turned around and saw Megan Hoover, Zack Rain, and Liu Lee Tran standing at the end of the aisle. I started my way over but was suddenly greeted by a gun pointed in my face, and the way blocked, by the two I didn't recognize.
"Let him pass." Zack said.
"We don't know him." The guy with the gun responded. I looked him up and down and noticed he had quite a long face with sharp, dissecting, brown eyes, and a pointy nose. Now Zack and Lee made their way towards me.
"Well we know him, Drake." Lee answered.
"So back the hell off." Zack finished. He pushed away Drake and his friend and welcomed me with a warm embrace.
"Damn, am I glad to see you two." I couldn't believe I actually found some of my friends. This was something different, this was a miracle.
"Oh and no hug for me?" Megan asked, her hands on her hips.
I went over to her and wrapped my arms around her, pressing my face into her shoulder. "I'm so glad you're alive. So glad..." I whispered into her ear. I didn't want to let go, it felt good to be in the embrace of someone I missed.
"Alright, alright, can we hurry up?" I turned around and looked at the other ass next to Drake. "We're on a scavenging run, no time for catching up." He had jet black hair with brown eyes and his lips were so thin and pale I could swear his face just dropped off into a mouth.
"I can't wait till you come back with us!" Megan gave me the biggest smile I had ever seen, while completing ignoring the other dude.
"Whoa whoa! He's not coming back with us." The unnamed one said. "We don't know him, plus he could be dangerous."
"He's coming back with us Fred, now shut your mouth and deal with it." Lee said, nodding at me.
"Thank you Lee." I responded.
"Liu." He corrected. "I went back to my birth name, not a lot of Asians left. Might as well represent."
"Good," I started. "I've always liked your real first name better." I walked up to him and patted him on the shoulder. "Alright now you two." I pointed to Drake and Fred. "I dunno what your problem is with me, but you ever pull a gun on me again, than you better take the shot." I looked both of them in the eye, both looking smug and smirking to each other. "Laugh now, regret later."
"I'd listen to him." Zack said as he brushed by them. Suddenly, the sounds of snapping teeth were near.
"We need to get the hell out of here!" Drake said as he rushed towards the back exit. "Zack with me, the rest of you cover our ass. We're gonna bolt to the car." I slipped my Osprey out of is holster and held it firmly in my left hand. I walked closer to the window until I was face to face with a Walker.
It's face was all torn up, revealing most of the jaw and parts of the skull. The bodies seemed to have decayed fast, but they weren't weakened. Maybe one or two alone wasn't tough, but all of them, like a horde, all riled up, that was one scary thought.
"Alex lets go!" Megan called out.
"I'll be there in a sec." I responded as I faced all the Walkers.
"Like the hell you will." Megan grabbed my hand and started to pull me away from the window, and then all the glass shattered. I fired two rounds into the crowd and then focused on the alley we just entered. I followed Megan as the rest of the crew was already at the car.
Drake honked the car while Liu and Zack kept calling out for us to hurry.
"Go!" I shouted. I pointed to the front of the van that they brought and took out the Walkers that peppered the street. The last thing we needed was getting stuck on one of those undead freaks. The car pulled up slowly, as I was about to hop in, Drake hit the acceleration and the car started to move faster and faster away from me.
"Whoa! Drake stop!" I fired two more rounds into the Walkers closing in on me, both hit their mark. The car started to slow down and the side door slid open.
"Alexander!" I heard Megan call out, waving for me to hurry over. I grabbed onto the handle of the car door and pulled myself in, falling back into Liu and Zack.
"You alright bud?" Zack asked as he pulled me up onto the seat. I nodded my consent and looked into the rear view mirror so I could see Drake's eyes.
"What the hell was that about?!" Liu exclaimed. "You can't just leave him back there."
I saw Drake look over to Fred for a split second, then he focused back on the road. "Yeah, you're right. Sorry about Alex, they were closing into fast. Needs of the many over power the needs of the few ya know?"
He was now looking into the rear view mirror, and I held his gaze their, just for a few seconds; but those few seconds of that stare down said more than whatever my response was going to be. He knew what would happen, so did I. It was just of when it would happen. "Yeah, I get it. Shit happens."
The car ride back to where ever we were going was silent the rest of the way there, but Megan kept looking back with a huge smile on her face and the occasional wink. I stared out the window as we drove up a windy road leading up to a mountain. The view was beautiful as we kept on going, Boston shining in the light of the setting sun, but that city no longer held its true beauty. It belonged to the dead now, and something told me that it would be a while before we retook it. The view transitioned from a city skyline to tall trees shading the road ahead us, night would be here in a few hours, I just hoped we'd be home by then, wherever home was.
"We're almost there." Zack said as he pointed to a sign that read 'The View' in big bold letters carved in wood. Drake pulled over near a few burned out vehicles and stopped the car. As soon as the engine died down we all exited the car, grabbing the supplies the crew had found in the city.
I was surprised when I saw all the food they had gathered, but who knew how long it would last. All these possible situations arose with a bunch of possible outcomes, however very few seemed like good possibilities. As all six of us walked the trail I could see parts of the high rise buildings in Boston through the spaces in between the trees.
After about a two minute walk I was able to see seven or eight tents along with two RVs' and three other cars that looked to be in good condition. "Yo, we're back." Fred called. Megan turned around once more and smiled to me, while Liu and Zack grabbed the bags I grabbed from the car. I looked over at all of them, but they just nodded. As I walked into the camp I could now see a few campfires and clothes lines, but then something caught my eye. More like someone.
She turned around and now I saw why Megan was smiling. I looked her straight in the face, my sister. I clasped my hands around my mouth and pointed to Marley. She had the most stunned face I had ever seen, and I'm sure I didn't look any different.
"It can't be..." I whispered. "I just can't..." I rushed over to my sister who came sprinting towards me. I opened my arms and then found Marley wrap herself around me. She tackled me to the ground and heard her sobs. "Let me see your face, let me see your face." I looked at my sister and saw those magnificent eyes, along with her beautiful smile. I pulled her back into a hug and let tears stroll down my face. "Awh thank God you're alive, thank God."
"Alexander?" I heard someone call out my name. When I turned to look I saw my best friend, my brother, James Nax. He walked over and got wrapped in the hug with me and my little sister. "This is unbelievable." I heard him say. I placed a hand on both of them.
"I can't believe you're both alive. Along with Zack, Liu, and Megan, I can't remember I had a day this good." I said, looking both of them in the eyes.
"We weren't the only ones." James and Marley pulled away and suddenly I saw a lot of familiar faces. Maximilian Frost, one of the fastest kids in every running and swimming event along with me and Liu. Julia Lavern. Paul Smith. Tomas Antony. Lauren Hefler. Ryan Fet. Nick Goax. Noah Baconi. David Zeller. Taylor Taven. Lexi Salie. Cara Valini.
All of them were my friends from school, and they all stuck together.
