I looked out at the scene in front of me, the sun setting and the sky blood red. I turned around to see the school once more, a huge hole in the band room from the chopper. The only thing that bothered me was how could one helicopter cause so many deaths? Also what was that thing that attacked me? Was that the disease that the news was talking about? Infected. So many questions yet no answers.
The road just in front of me and the school had a couple turned over cars, some of them were even burned. I didn't pay any more attention to the vehicles and started to walk to my house, which was just behind the school.
Instead of going through the school and coming across anymore of those things, I decided to walk through the sport fields, at least that way I could see a pretty far distance. The sun would set soon and I'm pretty sure I would be screwed if I didn't get home fast, at best I have around five minutes.
I started to run as fast as my body would let me, which was more of a fast jog. I'm able to run a lot faster, especially since I was on the track team, it was just that my body ached with every movement I made.
After about three minutes of jogging I could see my house in the distance, along with the other thirty houses in my neighborhood. Just a bit closer to me, about sixty feet away, was someone staggering across the football field. Almost exactly the same way that girl was walking. I decided not to approach it, even though I had a gun in my hand.
That still doesn't matter though. I didn't know if there was a special way to kill an infected, but even if I did knew I wouldn't take the shot. How could I be okay with taking someone else's life, especially if there was a chance for them to be cured. So I kept on jogging until I reached my neighborhood.
I got to the very edge of my neighborhood and saw no one roaming the streets. Some of the nearby houses though looked so destroyed, windows broken, wooden planks torn away from the patio or shutters. Even blood painted a few of the garage doors. My heart sank as I realized something, my family. Where were they? Was my sister even alive? Or my parents? Again so many questions yet no answers.
I walked a bit before I checked the magazine in my Osprey. Even if I wasn't planning on pulling the trigger, it could still be used as an intimidation factor. My house was just in the distance, a thirty second sprint if I could run fast enough. The dark was also making me want to run faster. So I did and kept my head on a swivel. A low growling sound kept originating from behind me, but when I turned around I couldn't see anything, or anyone. Even though the sun had just set, I was able to see a good ten to fifteen without having to squint.
I finally reached my house and lifted the mat just below my feet at the front door. I retrieved the key and placed it in the lock, the door making a slight creaking sound as I pushed it open. I quickly entered and locked the door behind me, a sense of relief filled my body as I finally felt safe. As safe as I could possibly be at the moment. I turned around and saw that the house was in pretty good condition. All the windows were still intact and no blood was on the tan painted walls. But there was something missing from the walls, all the family pictures. Which meant that one of my family members were alive, at least at the time they were.
I quickly walked around the first floor of my house and covered all the windows with the shades or blinds. Then I walked to the door that led to the patio and locked it. I made my way to the basement door and locked it like the other two doors except I placed a chair underneath the handle, just in case.
Once I was sure that the first floor was safe, I started to make my way up the stairs. Just when I reached the second floor I made a left into my sister's room. I tried flicking on the light but it seemed that the electricity was out, so I grabbed the flashlight that she kept in her drawer. I jut prayed that the batteries still worked.
I hit the button and a beam of light appeared. I shone it around the room and saw that pictures were gone, and when I went to her closet, a decent amount of her clothes were gone as well. I then made my way to my parents room which was at the end of the wide hallway, actually it was so wide that it was able to fit two, three foot doors, side by side.
The doors were wide open revealing that dark room. I entered and shone the light around just like I did with my sister's room. Pictures once more gone, but I was wondering something. I went to the bed and got down into a crawl, then I peeked under the bed and pulled out a large, thin briefcase. Opening it up I saw my dad's hunting rifle with ammunition and a few attachments. My emotions clashed a bit when I found the rifle. My dad and I were the only people who knew about him having this rifle in his room, my mom and sister didn't know since they didn't like guns in the house.
I just pushed the idea out of my head, as long as one of my family was alive, then I would be happy. I placed the rifle on the bed and went around the floor, closing the shades and windows. When I went to my room I grabbed my tablet that was laying on the desk, hopefully it would have some battery left, especially since I didn't know where my phone was.
I turned the tablet on and looked at the battery percentage. Thankfully, it was at eighty six percent left, and when I looked at the time and date my heart sank. The time was 7:15, but the date was November 4th, my concert was October 31st, which meant that I was almost unconscious and lying there for five days.
The way things have been going lately, tons of stuff could happen in five days. I just kept praying that nothing happened to whoever was alive in my family. I grabbed the tablet and tossed it on my parents bed, next to the rifle, and went back down stairs. Hopefully there would be food left, I hadn't realized how hungry was I getting until I thought about my kitchen.
Flashlight in hand I went to the cabinet and grabbed a plate. I went to my fridge and grabbed a water, then once I opened it I saw a good amount of food. Unfortunately it was all spoiled since it's been in the fridge without power for five days. So I went to the cupboard and started to look for anything filling. In there I found, Pringles, Oreo cookies, and even chicken soup with a portable gas stove on the bottom shelf. I grabbed all of it and then went to the cabinet once more to get a soup bowl and a spoon.
I rushed upstairs and placed the food on the floor in my parents bedroom. Then I closed and locked both doors, just after that I pushed the drawer up against it. Satisfied that it was shut, I went to the window that overlooked the backyard and shut the curtains.
Once everything was secure I turned on the small gas stove and put the opened can of soup on top. I held the rifle in my hand and started to inspect it as my food was cooking.
It was almost three feet long and had a dark brown color, I took the 8x zoom scope next to me and attached it to my hunting rifle. Then I attached the bipod and bayonet onto the gun. I did find it weird that my dad had a bayonet, I guess he used it for when his shot didn't kill the animal. After that I checked the bolt action and saw three bullets already loaded, along with the other eighteen rounds.
The soup had finally cooked and I just ate like there was no tomorrow. Within five minutes I ate all of my soup and almost all of the Pringles. I pushed away my food and was thinking about sleep, but then I heard a growling.
The sound originated from the backyard. I kept crouched in case whatever was out there would be able to see me and made my way over to the window. With the rifle in my hand, I peeled the curtain away and looked down at the scene below me. Just on the edge of the farm behind my house was about ten of the infected stumbling around, they didn't seem to have a definite path but they were making there way in my direction.
'I guess I'm not getting any sleep tonight' I thought to myself.
