“Millie, no!” I bellowed, my heart hammering against my ribcage like a caged beast. Time seemed to slow as we approached the unforgiving metal pillar, the world around us a blur of lights and sounds.

The impact was a symphony of shattered glass and crunching metal, a deafening crescendo that seemed to echo through the very marrow of my bones. The airbags inflated with the urgency of a dying breath, enveloping us in a silent, white fury.

With a force that sent me sprawling, the car ground to a halt. The world spun around me, and for a moment, I tasted copper in my mouth. My head was pounding, but I couldn’t ignore the primal instinct that screamed for me to check on Millie. I ripped the door open and stumbled out, the cold night air slapping me back to reality. I sprinted towards her car, the taste of fear sharpening my tongue.

The sight of her car’s metal frame crumpled around her like a twisted embrace made my stomach churn. The headlights cast eerie, elongated shadows across the pavement, painting a grim tableau of disaster. I could only hope she was fine, but the silence was a stark reminder of how precarious life truly is.

With trembling hands, I wrenched open the crumpled door of the wreck. Millie’s lifeless form was slumped over the steering wheel, her once vibrant eyes closed. Crimson rivers snaked down from the gash on her forehead, pooling like a macabre halo around her. The coppery scent of blood filled my nostrils, a grim reminder of the violence that had just transpired.

“Millie—” I whispered, my voice thick with dread. I reached out tentatively to touch her cheek, expecting the cold embrace of death, but she was still warm. Her chest rose and fell in shallow breaths, a faint pulse fluttering against my fingertips. Relief surged through me, a stark contrast to the horror that had gripped me moments ago.

With a grunt, I lifted her out of the wreckage and cradled her in my arms. She was so light, so fragile, it was hard to believe she could survive this. I had to get her to safety and get her the help she needed. My mind raced with thoughts of hospitals and doctors, of the lives that could be saved or lost in the blink of an eye.

I sprinted to my car, the sirens in the distance growing louder. The sound was like a symphony of dread, a reminder that time was not on our side. My heart thundered in my chest, each beat a silent prayer for her to hold on.

I laid her gently into the passenger seat, her head lolling back onto the headrest. Her eyes flickered open, those emerald orbs clouded with pain. “Don’t close your eyes,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper, trying to keep the fear at bay. “We’ll be at the hospital soon.”

Ignoring the surrounding chaos, I slammed the door shut and took my place behind the wheel. The engine roared to life, a beast awakening from its slumber. I peeled out of the scene, the tyres screeching a mournful tune as we left the wreckage behind. The streets of Moscow stretched out before us, a blur of lights and shadows.

The drive to the hospital was a nightmare. I pushed the car to its limits, weaving through traffic as if the devil himself were chasing us. The world outside the window was a mere smear of lights, the sirens growing ever closer. In the passenger seat, Millie’s breaths grew more and more shallow, and I could feel the warmth of her life slipping away like grains of sand through my clenched fist.

Pulling into the hospital’s emergency bay, I threw the car into park, and before the engine could even die down, I was out, cradling her in my arms. “We need a doctor!” I bellowed to the night air, the words ripped from the depths of my soul. The world stopped as the doors of the hospital swung open, a beacon of hope in the dark.
