“Lev—” he called for his man, shifting his attention from me to the laptop’s screen. “Lock all the Hunter Club members inside the building, then set it on fire.”

In an attempt to process what he had just said, I could feel my heart pounding in my chest and my breath coming out in short, ragged gasps. My hands clenched into fists by my sides, with my nails cruelly penetrating my palms. How was he able to stay calm? How on earth did he manage to make it sound so… normal?

Subsequently, I realised that he lacked empathy; I was aware of this, yet his remarks continued to rankle.

“Fine. Chief—” In response, Lev nodded his head and shoved the two men to the other side.

“Hey…” I managed to choke out, my voice barely audible over the thundering of my heart. “Stop!” I said, making sure Lev heard me clearly, but he looked over at his chief behind me, then turned away when he didn’t hear a response. “Stop him. You can’t do this!” I murmured as I turned to face him again and grabbed his coat lapel.

His jaw tensed as his dark gaze lowered to where I was gripping his coat’s lapel and then met my eyes. I felt as if he was seeing right through me, reading my innermost thoughts, feelings, and desires.

My heart skipped a beat as he slowly reached up, cupping my cheek in his warm, calloused hand. His touch sent a shiver down my spine, making me clench my thighs. “There are worse things I can do to disprove your assertions, so don’t say I can’t do this,” he whispered, his voice rough and low.

I swallowed hard, feeling the heat of his touch spread across my cheek. “Your actions are just terrible,” I said, my words coming out unsteady.

“I know.” His grip on my cheek tightened even more, and for a moment, I thought he was going to hurt me. However, I felt his hand leave my cheek, moving to cup my breast through my robe. “I will have to take this action as you refuse to identify who he was,” he whispered, his breath warm against my lips as his thumb brushed over my nipple, causing it to harden beneath his touch.

I could feel my body responding to his touch, despite the anger that still coursed through me. “I’m ready to identify him,” I said while gritting my teeth, knowing this man was cold-blooded and capable of doing this without feeling remorse. “Now release your grip on me. Your man is on the other side of the screen.” I attempted to take his hand off me, but his fingers were still playing with my breast.

He studied my face for a moment, his expression unreadable. Then, slowly, grasping my waist with his other hand, he drew me in towards his powerful chest. “Millie—” he mumbled, his breath hot against my ear. “Is it truly your desire for me to remove my hand from you?” His voice was smooth as silk, each word carefully chosen and enunciated.

I said nothing and lifted my eyes, but his gaze was fixed intently on the laptop screen in front of him with his jaw clenched tightly as if he were fighting against some inner turmoil.
