Chapter 12: Feisty

Its morning once more and I am totally not ready to go through with today. For some reason I feel depressed, but guess what, I'll smack depression right back in its face.
I feel like depression is kicking me now.

I get up reluctantly and get ready for spending some time with my good old pals, too young to be my pals, sad that the only friend that they have is a middle aged man. Well they're grateful to have me, one day we're going to hang out like actual friends and not colleagues.

I go into the kitchen after getting ready and call Henry to see if we're still on for today.

He picks up and says, "Hey Aiden, you coming today right? I bought you a coffee."
Oh such a nice guy, I say, "Oh yeah, I'll be there by 10, thanks for the coffee. You're a lifesaver."
I hang up the phone, make some toast and munch on it as I go to my car. I get in and drive towards Henry's, well now its kind of also my workspace so, my office which is owned by Henry.

God why do I sound dead drunk? I can feel it by myself.

"Hey guys, how are you today?" I ask as I settle into the room and grab my coffee. "Well, we for sure missed our client," says Guy with a small smirk playing at the edge of his lips. "Oh I'm flattered, by the way I learnt quite a bit about the both of you. I'll tell you after today's session."

They look more curious and Henry says, "Dude you're such a dick, why would you say that? You could've just told the entire thing at the evening. Now this whole mystery and curiosity is going to eat me away slowly and I'll be digested by the time you tell us."

I just laugh, I guess we're all drunk today. Everyone is speaking quite comical to my ears, even I am.

I try to speak, but as usual Guy interrupts me and says, "Before you ask, let me tell you, we left off at the unlocked phone part."

I just gave him a disgusted look and say, "Rude, but thanks. Anyways moving on, Rachel and I received the phone from John. We go home and start trying to find something in the phone, mainly the messages. So we went into the app, you probably guessed right, all the messages were deleted. So we tried backing up the device, but dumb move, you need to enter personal info for that.

So we tried to go through everything. I went into the notes app to see a phone number. I showed it to Rachel. Finally a lead, well thats what we thought, until we actually called the number. Can one of you guess who answered? I mean you don't know them but try to guess the type of person they were."

Guy just looks and mumbles, "I don't know. To be honest, I don't where to even start guessing from. Maybe a child, you know, since she was a pedophile. Maybe she got one of her students' number."

I say, "Well its good thinking but, let me tell you. I recognized that number right away because it belonged to someone I was quite close with. It was Katerina's number."

Guy says, "The name makes me think that she was a hot lady."

I laugh and say, "Boy you're about to cry because she was the 70 year old grandma in my street. My neighbor, I used to visit her like everyday before going to work. We were like thick friends."

Guy stuck in shock says, "Hey I'm may not be wrong, we don't know how she was in her 20's and 30's."

I laugh and say, "We don't know, maybe. So I instantly knew that the number was hers and I called it. She picked it up, no surprise. So what can we infer from this students?"

Henry snickers and says in a serious tone, "That the killer was having sex with a 70 year old grandma."

I laugh and say, "Close enough I guess, but I don't think sex. The killer was close enough with Katerina that she gave them her number."

Guy then says, "Even if they were having sex, and the killer was a woman, then do you think that Katerina would have been a lesbian. Or was she desperate to do it with anyone? Or was the killer so desperate?"

I look at him and say, "Dude first of all, they probably didnt have sex, because I know her and she is a woman with dignity who personally said to me that she'd only have sex with people her age, whether a man or woman. Secondly, if she had sex she'd probably die in a second. So I don't think sex is how the killer got the number."

Guy says, "Yeah we know, we're joking."
I nod and say, "Clearly, but still, you have no clue about the granny at all. Her kids kind of abandoned her, so instead of going to a home for old people, she wanted to live independently till the day she died. She was stubborn as hell, but always had that soft spot for me.

She used to give me the motherly affection, like small kisses, and Rachel would just stare since she didnt get any. Rachel and Katerina used to fight like hell. I swear to god, they used to fight like it was the end of the world over me. For instance, when we used to lock the door of our house, while leaving for work, you could find Katerina on her front yard, watering her plants and waiting to wave at me.

So Rachel would be like , 'Get a life you old hag, leave my husband alone and concentrate on watering your own plants instead of the road.' Then Katerina would be like, 'I hear a dog yelling.'

I used to roll on the floor laughing and Rachel would just give me the death glares. I never used to meddle in between their fights because, they were tight, and I knew that even though they would fight like cats and dogs, they were always there for each other.

Like its just tough love I guess. So, the question now was, 'How did the killer get the number?'

From the instances that I have already stated now, you know what kind of a lady Katerina was. It couldn't have been easy.

And another possibility here, what if Alice knew Katerina in some way? I mean, why did Alice even respond to the texts from that number?

We got the answer soon enough. Later in the evening, Rachel and I visited Katerina and boy was she glad to see me. She was a smart lady even though she was old. Obviously, Katerina wasn't our killer, she was too fragile and on a wheelchair now, but the chances of her knowing them was high.

So we kind of just asked her where she previously worked and what her profession was. Apparently she used to work in a daycare till her 60's. So we asked her if she came across Alice by chance. Then it struck her. She said that once, Alice came to ask about the daycare, to enroll her kid.

Apparently they both synced well and Katerina thought that Alice was a nice woman at that time. But she never saw her again. That's all that happened.

So from this, there are two possibilities. First, the killer was close enough to borrow her number for a while, which is unlikely because Katerina denied that. Second, the killer might have known Katerina well enough to go to her previous work place and get her number from the log register.

The grandma looked dead into Rachel's eyes, and then shot a quick look at me and said that she really never gave her number to anyone."

"Damn, I like that grandma, she is feisty," says Guy with a smile playing on his lips.

I just give him a disgusted look and say, "Get a life dude."

I feel like this chapter was funnier because of Katerina. I like her, and I like the fact that Guy is simping for her. Well I tried to upload a chapter yesterday but couldn't, I'm sorry. I hope you liked this one.
