We are all sitting around the burning fish, it is quite cozy. The weather is kind of cold, but the fire feels warm, so it is kind of like a warm iced tea, if you know what I mean.
Henry suddenly speaks up, "Do you think Kane really was the culprit? I feel like the evidences point towards him, but my gut feeling says that he didn't do it. I am kind of in a dilemma." I genuinely look at him and say, "Don't worry, Rachel was in the same boat. She knew that logically, going by the evidence, the killer seems to be Kane. But the problem was, we didn't have enough evidence to prove that it was him, I mean everyone could be lying, who knows?"
Valerie says, "Even though you say that you didn't have enough evidence, instead if leaving the case unsolved you could have testified that Kane was the murderer with whatever evidence you had, right? The guy seems really suspicious, all of the evidences point towards him after all."
I sigh and say, "And what if Kane wasn't the murderer? What if we were accusing a poor dead guy? His dignity even after death would have been ripped off of him. Some people would have maybe even cheered for his death. Rachel kept all of this in mind. She would always only come to conclusion when she exactly knows what happened."
Valerie just nods in deep thinking. I continue, "I still feel like Kane wasn't the murderer. I mean, sure, he was a criminal, but U don't think that he had the guts to murder someone. Moreover, why would he kill Kenny's abuser? The guy didn't visit his mother too, they weren't on good terms at all. Then why would Katerina give her number to Kane?
She was old, but not dumb. This guy was probably not even aware of Kenny's existence. Plus, why would he kill in front of my street?
See I can keep going on with counter questions to the accusations made. So that is why we let the poor guy off the hook. I mean, he was dead already."
Guy says with a little doubt, "You mentioned that he was a criminal, what did he do? Something petty?"
I sigh and reply after thinking for a second, "You could call it that I guess. He was a big gambler and lost all of his money. This all happened after he separated from his mother.
I think this was the reason for their fights. Anyway, Kane lost all of his money and was in deep shit when he owed another person about a million dollars. So Kane along with his firefighter friend planned a terrible scheme which ended in Kane's death.
Kane wanted to fake his own death, so to make a scene he needed some official to report his dead temporarily. He had an idiot firefighter friend who suggested to use a medicine to temporarily stop his heart.
Basically, Kane called the rescue services and said that he felt suicidal and might hang himself. When the rescue caller tried to help him out, Kane requested for his dear firefighter friend.
By the way, all of this was acting.
He kept on asking for him and the caller asked his firehouse number. So part one was successful, where Kane made sure that his friend came to the scene. So the next step was to hang himself five seconds before the firefighters barged in. He obviously didn't die then, because his firefighter friend came and helped him out.
After Kane was laid down, he acted dead while his friend acted like he was checking his pulse. Then the friend injected a heart stopping chemical, I don't remember the name. The fact is that, you can revive the heart via CPR few minutes later. But if it takes you too long to do CPR, you'll be dead.
And so, he injected it and then checked his pulse, which obviously wouldn't have been felt by anyone. Then few seconds later, in the paramedic van the firefighter tried to do proper CPR, which to the friend's bad luck, failed.
Kane was officially dead. Now the friend got super scared and didnt want to take Kane to the hospital because he was scared of being caught and sent to jail. Because in the postmortem, the doctors would be clearly able to see the foreign chemical in Kane's blood, which is quite rare to get a hold on.
So, lying that he took Kane to a hospital, the firefighter friend took him to land fill and dumped his body deep inside garbage. That is how, in an attempt to escape debt, Kane ended up in a land fill. Guess where the friend ended up? Yeah jail. Again like I said, I don't like murderers."
Ginny looks at me wide eyed and says, "That is the most messed up thing I have heard all year. The firefighter was damn loyal though. But I'd fire the firehouse captain rather than that friend. I feel like due to his lathogic behavior, all of this happened. I mean he should have supervised his workmen better."
I nod in agreement and say, "Yeah, that guy was fired for his irresponsible act. Or maybe, he just trusted his colleagues that much. Who knows?"
Then Henry speaks up, "Before throwing the firefighter in jail, did you ask him anything about you actual case?"
I look at him proudly and say, "Yeah, you guessed it right. We asked him if he or Kane knew anything about a murder which happened in Whitestreet. He said that he didn't know anything about Whitestreet except for the fact that Kane's mom lived there. He also said that Kane kept repeating the fact that he missed his mom a lot. Poor kid, some mistakes happen but this one was just upright stupid."
Guy asks me softly, with a hint of sympathy, "Did Katerina know about this? I mean, did you tell her?" I say, "I didn't know how to tell her at first. Rachel and I both went to her house on a late evening, after finishing up some investigation. It was kind of surprising that the grandma was quiet when she welcomed us in.
I was struggling to bring up the topic when Rachel just put her hand on my thigh tapping it twice, asking me to calm the hell down. Then she smoothly brought up the topic of Kane. We thought that Katerina would complain about him but all she said was 'I wish I could see him one last time before I die,' that almost made me bawl but I controlled myself.
Rachel was taken aback too, but she knew what had to be done. So she told her about her sons death. We expected a nuclear reaction to take place. Well even if not that much, at least some tears. We were more than ready to lend her both of our shoulders to cry on, but she smiled and just thanked us.
We took our leave, but after she shut the door, we could hear silent sobs. It was heart breaking to see such an old woman stay strong in front of everyone, but break inside. I wanted to go in and console her, but I also knew that she needed her space.
I paid her a little visit a few days later, she seemed to hold herself together but I knew she wasn't good on the inside. I mean, anyone would be as sad as her. She lost the closest relation to her, a person who she created and carried for nine months. That bond can never be destroyed even by small issues like money and gambling.
After all this happened, Rachel and I really wanted to visit Maya, so we did. I will always be grateful for having someone kind like Maya as my adopted mother. I would give her and Rachel the world just to see them smile."
Valerie smiles, while Ginny is already in tears. Guy is about to weep but he brushes it off as, "I'm sweating due to the heat of the fire." Henry just stays quiet.
