"Dawn's coming," Sanemi announced after forty five minutes of running out of Eji to fully push themselves in the clear from Enmu's presence, glancing around and spotting what looked to be a sparsely used Shinto shrine. "We'll rest here for evening until we could move one tomorrow evening. Iguro, watch (Y/N). I'll procure us some food."
Obanai nodded as Sanemi disappeared into the night, gesturing for (Y/N) to follow him inside.
The shrine itself was clean and void of any dust, cobwebs, or bugs that could've come inside and claimed home within the building. In all sense of the word, it was fairly kept up and tidy. Obanai crouched against the wall closest to the entrance to keep watch, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword in case he needed to draw it at a moment's notice. (Y/N), meanwhile, began to explore the shrine, finding it to be quite small yet beautiful. In the back, there was a small porch hidden in the shadows, and it was there that she could see the beginnings of the sun rise.
She sucked in a deep breath, in awe.
Here, in the safe shadows of the porch, she could witness the sun rising which she so dreadfully missed.
It was a blessing.
Sitting down, careful in choosing which spot would be the least risky, she allowed herself to take in the natural beauty of the world. In that moment of calm, she could finally, fully appreciate what was around her, closing her eyes and basking in the early morning air that was as crisp and cool as she remembered it. This peace was what she desired for herself and Kenji. To be able to live without fear of what came next, at least for a little while, was what she wanted for herself and her brother.
It was a nice dream.
But then again, all dreams had to end.
"What are you doing out here?" A voice called out, (Y/N) turning to spot Obanai glaring down at her from the doorway. "Are you trying to get yourself killed? The sun is rising."
"No," she chuckled humorlessly, flicking her gaze back to the sky.
"They why are you out here?"
"I miss the sun."
Obanai scoffed at her answer, finding it quite contradictory of how a demon who thrived in the darkness would miss the sun—the very thing that could end their life in a miserable, painful second. He stared down at her, watching as the line of sunlight slowly crept towards her with each passing moment. His gaze then flicked back to her face, finding that not even an ounce of fear could be seen, those (E/C) eyes of hers instead reflecting a type of fondness for something she hadn't seen in a long time.
