the day was colder than usual. the chilly air bit her skin as she walked down the hall to class. y/n wrapped her arms around herself, wishing she'd thought to grab her school jacket before heading out this morning. she should've known it would be chilly, but she hadn't exactly planned for it to feel like winter in the middle of fall.

as she turned the corner into the classroom, she spotted taesan already sitting at their desk. his gaze flickered up as she entered, and for a brief second, she caught the way his eyes lingered on her, maybe a little too long for a casual glance. but he quickly averted his gaze.

"cold, huh?" taesan's voice was low. there was something soft in the way he said it, almost like he was concerned without meaning to be.

y/n glanced at him, her fingers rubbing her arms for warmth. "yeah, just a bit," she answered. "it's a chilly day. don't know why the weather has been this bipolar lately."

he chuckled at that. "you should've worn your jacket," he added, almost casually.

y/n shrugged, "didn't think it would be this cold," she said, though she knew that was a lie. she was always too lazy to check the weather in the mornings.

taesan didn't say anything else. instead, he just looked at her for a moment longer, then turned his attention back to his book. but the look he gave her was enough. it was enough to make y/n's chest feel a little warmer than it had a second ago.

she didn't know why it felt different this time. it was just a casual comment. just a normal, everyday thing. and yet, there was something in the way he said it that stuck with her, like maybe he cared more than he was letting on.

the bell rang, signaling the start of class, and y/n sank into her seat beside the boy, trying to shake off the feeling that had settled in her chest. it was just a comment. just taesan being himself.

but still, she couldn't help but wonder.

why had he said it that way?
