"Mummy, Ruhi wants to tell you something." I broke the silence of the past five minutes
Mom looked up from packing her bag. "Haa bol," she said.
(Go on.)We were scheduled to return to Mumbai that day, and it was already 7 pm. I elbowed Ruhi, who was standing beside me silently.
"Haa vo actually, vo meri agli exams Jaipur me hone wali he," Ruhi said nervously, fidgeting with her hands.
(Actually, my next exams are going to be held in Jaipur.)
Mom looked at us expectantly. "To?" she asked, her tone encouraging.
(So?)Ruhi took a deep breath. "To mujhe yaha ke college ke baare me kuch information chahiye thi matlab usse related," she said, her eyes darting between Mom and me.
(I need some information about the college here, related to that.)
Mom's expression turned thoughtful. "To?" she asked again.
(So?)Ruhi hesitated before speaking. "To mene Aarti se kaha ki, vo ye sab ke baare me pta laga le, kyunki me to nhi ruk sakti kyunki college se mene already bahot holidays le liye he isiliye," she said, stumbling over her words.
(I told Aarti to find out all about it because I couldn't stay here since I've already taken a lot of holidays from college)
Mom's gaze turned stern. "Lekin vo yaha akeli kese? Or tu itne din kya kar rhi thi?" she asked, her voice firm but concerned.
(But how can she stay here alone? And what were you doing all these days?)
Ruhi looked down, her face flushing. "Aree mom, aaj hi message aaya college se, to me kya karti? Or Rudra bhai bhi aaj ke din yahi he, kal aane wale he, to Aarti unke sath aa jayegi," she said finally, her voice barely above a whisper.
(Mom, I just got a message from college today, what could I do? And Rudra is also here today, he's coming tomorrow, so Aarti will come with him)
Mom's expression turned worried. "Are lekin iski bhi to hotel ke kaam pde he, tu kyu ise faaltu me pareshan kar rhi he?" she asked, her voice tinged with concern.
(But doesn't she have work at the hotel? Why are you bothering her unnecessarily?)
I stepped forward, trying to intervene. "Haa maa mene isse yahi kaha lekin ye maanne ko taiyar hi nhi he," I lied, trying to make sense. Ruhi gave me a knowing look, and I made a puppy face at her.
(Yes, Mom, I told her the same thing, but she's not willing to listen)
Just then, my brother's voice came from outside. "To me ruk jaata hu," he said, walking towards us.
(I'll stay back.)"Me or Rudra sath aa jayenge," he added. ("Rudra and I will come together.")
I felt a surge of panic and said harshly, "No." Everyone looked at me in confusion.
