Advika's POV
I curled into a ball on the couch, clutching my stomach tightly.
The bed was tempting, but I knew better than to use it. The last time I sat there, Shravan made such a scene. He is dangerously obsessed with his possessions, and I’m not in the mood to fight with him today.
It’s barely been a week since this so-called marriage, and I’m already keeping a Karwa Chauth fast for him.
Mom just asked me if I could keep the fast, but I could see in her eyes that she wanted me to. She explained that married women observe this fast for the long life of their husbands, refraining from food and water until the moon rises. It’s only after performing the rituals that we break the fast, with the husband making the wife drink water.
The irony? I’m fasting for someone whose death wouldn’t make the slightest difference to me.
But right now, it feels like I won’t even make it to the evening, let alone the moonrise.
The door creaked open, and Shravan walked in. He seemed preoccupied, not even acknowledging my presence as he shrugged off his jacket.
Just as he was about to toss it onto the couch, his gaze landed on me. His brows furrowed as his eyes scanned me from head to toe. Slowly, he walked over, and his next question completely blindsided me.
“Are you pregnant?”
"Are you mad?" I asked him back "How could anyone become pregnant without..."
I trailed off, sighing. My stomach was too empty to waste energy on him.
"You are curled up like this while clutching your stomach, I thought that may be ..." He shrugged his shoulder with not even an ounce of embarrassment for what he just said.
“Shravan, I’m fasting for you, and this is how you talk to me?” I said, pushing myself into a sitting position.
“Fasting? You mean Karwa Chauth?” he asked.
I nodded.
“Why?”
I didn’t answer. What was I supposed to tell him?
“There’s no need to keep any fast for me,” he stated flatly. “I’ll die when I die. Your so-called fast won’t change that.”
He walked over to the side table, poured a glass of water, and brought it to me.
"Have it." He moved it towards me; the glass was just a few inches apart from my lips, tempting me to break my resolve. "I will bring something for you to eat."
My eyes darted between him and the glass. As tempting as it was, I pushed it away.
“I can’t,” I said, looking away and licking my parched lips.
“Why? Why all this drama when you know...”
“I’m doing this for Mom, not for you,” I interrupted.
“Kya? Wo tumhari pati kab se ban gayin?” (What? Since when did she become your husband?)
I shot him a sharp look as if he’d sprouted horns.
“I’m doing it out of respect,” I clarified. “She asked me for something for the first time, and I don’t want to disappoint her. Even if she doesn’t know I’ve had water, I will. I can’t lie to myself.”
His jaw clenched as he placed the glass back on the table.
“Theek hai, maro toh.” (Fine, then. Die.)
