(M/N) could hear shuffling from down the hall and he quickened his pace. He got dressed and gazed at the guitar leaning against the wall next to his bed. Julie and Charlie had gotten it for him on his birthday two weeks ago. He was very confused at first. He used to take guitar lessons a few years back, but he didn't think his mother knew about that.
"A guitar?" (M/N) looked at Julie in shock after opening the present.
"Yes, I wasn't sure what else you would have wanted, do you like it?" Julie asked hopefully.
"Uh, yeah, it's really nice. Did Dad tell you I used to play?" (M/N) guessed.
Julie frowned. "You don't play anymore?"
"I can! It's fine, really! I like it, thanks Mum," he quickly said.
"Well, Charlie helped pay for it." She nudged Charlie who smiled a bit.
"Thanks Charlie," (M/N) added.
(M/N) didn't know why he stopped playing. He didn't hate it, it was just one of those things he lost interest in. He was grateful Julie was trying, though, so he decided to try and pick it up again. So far he had made a bit of progress, he was learning how to play some songs–the internet was his only guide–but he still needed more practice. He refused to play for Bella until he became more adept at it, much to her dismay.
Speaking of which, today was Bella's birthday, and as much as (M/N) wanted to get her something, they had both agreed to no presents on birthdays years ago.
He came down the stairs just in time to see Charlie handing Bella her presents while Julie watched.
"Dad, I thought I said no presents," Bella complained.
"Well, I didn't wrap mine and Julie's, so it doesn't count." He handed her a camera.
Despite her reluctance in receiving the gift, Bella smiled. "Thanks guys, this looks great."
"This one's from your Mum." She took the wrapped gift from Charlie and opened it, revealing a book. "It's a scrapbook. She wanted you to get some pictures for your senior year."
Bella's face faltered at the words 'senior year'.
"Why don't you guys stand together, I'll take one now," Julie suggested. Bella handed the camera to Julie before moving closer to (M/N). They smiled as Julie snapped a picture. She looked at the screen and smiled as well. "It looks great."
"We should get going now, we're gonna be late," (M/N) said as he and Bella moved towards the front door. They hopped in their truck and drove off to school. Unsurprisingly, Edward was waiting by his silver Volvo in the parking lot. Alice was there as well, and she skipped forward to meet them when they exited the truck.
"Happy birthday, Bella!"
Bella groaned. "Don't remind me."
She was still hung up about Edward not letting her become a vampire. (M/N) still hadn't talked to her about it–he wasn't entirely sure why. Maybe he was afraid of the answer she would give him, worried that she was moving on and he would have to as well. He tried not to dwell on it.
"Do you want this present now or later?" Alice asked, holding out a small wrapped box as they walked towards Edward.
"No presents," Bella mumbled.
"...Later then. Did you like the camera and scrapbook?" Alice continued. (M/N) imagined foresight would make any birthday celebrations impossible to keep a surprise.
