(M/N) waited for Bella to return, to explain what happened. But she never did. Hours passed and Charlie and Julie came home. They asked him where Bella was, he didn't know what to tell them. He just said she had gone for a walk with Edward into the woods not far from their house. Another hour passed, it started to get dark, and Charlie grew more worried. Eventually it became too much for him and he began calling for help. (M/N) wanted to go looking for her himself, but Julie wouldn't let him, lest he get lost as well. So he stood on the porch, watching the now dark forest as it began to rain. He tuned out everything happening around him and grabbed the note from his pocket. He could just barely read the words with the light coming through the windows.

They were gone. Edward. Alice. All of the Cullens. It was so sudden, as if they had been picked up and swept away by the wind in an instant. It must have been because of the party. (M/N) knew Edward was upset about it, but... he never anticipated this. He didn't even get to say goodbye.

He didn't know how long he stood there, but eventually a bunch of townspeople showed up. Most he didn't recognise. There were some Quileute boys, Billy Black, and his son.

"Hey, (M/N)."

(M/N) nodded to Jacob when he came to stand next to him. It was odd seeing Jacob without a smile adorning his face. But given the circumstances, it made sense.

"I heard that Bella was missing and had to come up. How are you doing?"

"Worried. But I'm sure she's okay," (M/N) said. He watched as Billy sent one of the Quileute boys into the forest before going back to talk to Charlie and Julie.

"Who's he?" (M/N) asked Jacob.

"Sam Uley," Jacob responded with a flat tone. "The forest goes on for a long while, and down at the rez we're pretty familiar with it. I wish Dad would let me go looking as well, but I guess... Sam probably has a better chance at finding her than anyone else."

"That's good." (M/N) didn't need to imagine how Bella would have taken the news that the Cullens were gone. Did Edward take her out there just to tell her that? Why would he leave her there alone? Maybe he thought she would be able to find her way back? There was no way he would intentionally harm her. That, (M/N) was certain of.

As if he was reading (M/N)'s mind, Jacob said, "Did you hear? That the Cullens left town?"

Word spread fast, it seemed. "Yeah, that's why I'm worried about her."

"She and Edward still...?"

"Yes," (M/N) answered. "Well, they were. Not anymore, I guess."

"What about you? Weren't you friends with him as well?" Jacob asked. It was only then (M/N) realised how uncomfortable he looked talking about Edward and the Cullens in general. (M/N) was too focused on the forest and he wasn't really paying attention to Jacob.

"Yeah. I don't know why they left, though," (M/N) lied.

After a painstakingly long hour, Sam re-emerged from the forest with Bella in his arms. "I found her!" his voice boomed.

Everyone rushed towards him, (M/N) not far behind as Charlie grabbed her from his arms. She must have wandered out considerably far. How had Sam managed to find her and bring her back in such a marginally shorter amount of time?

(M/N) was by Charlie's side. Bella looked like she wasn't entirely conscious, but not asleep either.

"Bella! What happened? Are you okay?"

She didn't answer him and Julie put a hand on his shoulder. "Let's get her inside first, dear."

"Fill us in on how she's doing, will you, Charlie?" Billy said. Everyone moved back to their cars to leave.
