(M/N) kicked the soccer ball back to Jessica as he glanced back at the truck. Bella was leaning against the hood, waiting for Edward to show up.
"Bella! You wanna join us?" Mike called as he kicked the ball to Eric, who kicked it to Angela.
She looked over at them and smiled, but shook her head, holding up the book in her hand. She was never one for sports, but neither was (M/N), he was just passing the time.
Edward never showed up in the parking lot, so (M/N) wasn't surprised when his seat in Biology was also empty. Bella was clearly frustrated, not being able to confront the source of that anger.
More days passed and Edward still didn't show, but (M/N) started to notice the Cullens glancing at him and Bella every so often. Just passing moments: In the hallway, in the cafeteria, driving into school. Emmett and Jasper seemed indifferent. Rosalie looked at them with chilling eyes. Alice with curiosity. Just what was going on?
(M/N) didn't know what else to do other than try and ignore them, immersing himself in whatever conversation Jessica, Mike, Angela or Eric would start. He was starting to feel like a part of their friend circle, though. Bella as well, but unlike him, she didn't try to ignore what was happening. She was determined to figure out what was going on.
A week passed. (M/N) headed downstairs after getting ready for school. He found Bella already packing her bag, about to head out.
Julie called out from upstairs. "Have a nice day."
"Sure thing Mum," (M/N) yelled back and turned back to Bella. "I'm driving today."
"Sure."
They opened the front door and Bella groaned. It was pouring down rain. The yard was full of puddles, some frozen.
"Still don't know why you hate the rain, it's nice," (M/N) said.
"It's cold and makes everything wet," Bella said. She took a few steps down the path to the driveway and slipped. (M/N) just barely caught her as Charlie pulled up with their truck.
"See? This sucks." Bella balanced herself on (M/N)'s arm.
He laughed. "Just gotta watch where you're walking."
"You kids alright?" Charlie asked.
"Never better," Bella quipped. "Ice doesn't help the uncoordinated."
A rustling filled (M/N)'s ears from somewhere nearby. He looked around but couldn't spot anything.
"That's why I had the tires replaced." Charlie gestured to the truck.
"Yeah, thanks." Bella trudged towards the passenger door.
"Later, Charlie," (M/N) said.
Charlie gave a thumbs up. "Oh, by the way, Julie's cooking tonight since I've got to work late. I'm heading down to Mason County. A security guard at the Grisham Mill got killed by some kind of animal."
"An animal?" (M/N) questioned.
"You kids aren't in Phoenix anymore. They've been hunting it for the past week. I thought I'd lend a hand."
"Be careful," Bella said as she got into the truck.
"Always am."
(M/N) hopped into the driver's seat and shut the door, taking one last glance at his surroundings.
"Something wrong?" Bella asked.
"No, uh... Let's get going."
They had Biology first up today. Eric was trying to chat Bella up, as usual.
