"(M/N), are you okay?"
(M/N)'s focus was brought back to the present at the feeling of Bella's fingertips on his arm. He turned to look at her, she was sitting next to him on the plane. They were currently flying to Italy–they had barely made it in time for their flight. Alice and Bella didn't say much on the way, or if they did, (M/N) hadn't heard them. Everything that happened in between them leaving home and Bella speaking to him now was a blur.
Truth be told, (M/N) wasn't fine. He felt awful. It felt like any time something bad happened–which seemed to be a lot, recently–he would quite nearly lose his mind. Just a constant wave of stress, anxiety, anger and sadness.
Would it ever stop?
He definitely didn't react this badly to things before Forks. Even just finding out he had feelings for Jacob. A revelation like that shouldn't be as bad as it was for him, even though he knew it meant being in pain every time he saw Jacob with Bella, because he now knew he wanted that, as well.
He was worried about what their parents would think when they returned to the house to find it empty. (M/N) and Bella purposely left their phones behind, because they would have no valid excuse for ignoring Charlie and Julie's calls for however long they would be gone.
If we even make it back alive.
It was all just too much, but that wouldn't do them any good right now if he brought it up.
"We have more important things to deal with," (M/N) said, effectively shutting down the conversation.
Bella clearly wanted to talk more about it, but (M/N) wouldn't budge.
"Okay, later then. After we save Edward..."
(M/N) sighed. "Look, Bells. What I said the other day, about moving on–"
"No, it's okay. You don't need to say anything. We'll just save him, and then figure out what to do next," Bella said. That's when (M/N) noticed her leg bouncing up and down anxiously. Clearly, this whole experience was taking too long for her, but they literally couldn't get to Italy any faster than by plane.
(M/N) squeezed her hand. "We'll make it in time."
"I hope so."
(M/N)'s gaze landed on Alice, who sat on Bella's right side. He leaned in closer. "So, seeing as we're heading straight to them, is there anything we should know about the Volturi?"
Alice glanced around to make sure no one close by was listening before she spoke. "Vampires usually travel alone. Our family is abnormal in that sense. It's the same with our cousins up north–the Denali clan. Carlisle suspects that abstaining from human blood makes it easier for us to be more civilised, form bonds based on love rather than survival or convenience. Even James's coven was unusually large–and you saw how easily Laurent left them. The only family bigger than our own, at least based on what we know, is the Volturi.
"Five of them make up the family, the rest make up the guard. I suspect their age is what allows them to live peacefully together, since they've been around for thousands of years. Or maybe it's just their gifts that give them that extra tolerance."
"Do they all have gifts?" (M/N) asked.
Alice was silent as she waited for a man to walk past, then she turned back to (M/N) and Bella. "Not all of them, but most of them. Many were chosen to join the Volturi's ranks because of their gifts. Some of their talents make what I can do look like a parlor trick."
Bella breathed out in a clear loss for words. This was all a lot to take in, for both her and (M/N).
Alice continued. "They don't get into too many confrontations. No one is stupid enough to mess with them. They really only leave their city if duty calls."
