"I mean it, (M/N)."
"Yes, Dad. I know."
He moved the phone away from his ear when Joseph raised his voice.
"No, you don't! Julie called me crying, begging me to take you back to Phoenix. You've put her through too much, and you just won't go?"
"It hasn't been easy on me, either..."
"And you think that's an excuse to treat her the way you have been so far?"
"Of course not. I just don't want to leave–I'm doing better now, really. I promise things are easier."
There was a long drawn out sigh.
"Your behaviour these last few months hasn't been okay. I don't know the specifics with Bella, but you can't do that anymore. I'll be asking Julie for frequent updates, and if you aren't improving, I'll bring you back to Phoenix myself. Understand?"
"Yes, I understand."
(M/N) flopped back onto his bed after Joseph hung up. He wasn't too worried about that. He knew he was getting better. There were still some things he hadn't dealt with, but he'd get there. Baby steps.
He thought about visiting Jacob like he always did. But there was a lot on his mind that would be a nuisance, and a lot of homework that was piling up, so he decided against it.
Bella did ask Jessica to head to Port Angeles to see a movie with her, and Jessica agreed, so Bella would be off in a couple of hours.
(M/N) sat at his desk and worked through the many sheets of work he had been neglecting. At around 5 pm, he grew tired of equations and quadratic formulas and was going to relax, but then he remembered that Julie and Charlie were expecting him to be hanging out with Jacob. He didn't want to worry Julie, so he settled on a middle ground.
He grabbed his guitar case and hopped down the steps towards the front door. Bella would probably be leaving soon, but she said Jessica was coming to pick her up, so he was free to take the truck. He wanted to leave before Charlie and Julie got home.
(M/N) put his guitar on the passenger seat and drove out onto the street. He travelled the roads for a while until he found the spot he had become very familiar with, a part of the woods he quite liked. He parked the truck, grabbed his guitar and made the trek deep into the shrubbery.
The sun was very close to setting by this time, it was nearly golden hour, but he had some time before it went completely dark. Guitar case slung across his back, he hiked up the hillside until his legs were burning. He broke through into a small clearing that brought relief at mere sight. The trees became far and thin as he neared the rocky edge, peering over at the steep mountain range extending outwards, the lake in view.
(M/N) sat against a nearby tree that still let him keep his view. He pulled out his guitar, absently brushing his fingers against the strings as he thought of what to play. He was barely average when he stopped practising years ago, so trying to pick it back up again wasn't easy. But for clear reasons, he had found himself with much free time these past few months to come out here alone and practise. He had to get considerable help from online guides first, though. But now he was finally getting the hang of it, learning how to play full songs.
A song he had been trying a lot recently came to mind, and he moved his fingers to the memory. His body relaxed as the melody filled the chilly air. The tune resonated deeply with him for reasons unknown, maybe because it reminded him of Bella. Yet it wasn't a sad feeling, he couldn't find it in himself to be sad. It brought back his memories of growing up with her. Reminded him of the good times. Usually, anyway. It was a lot harder in recent days. Today, it just made him worried about Bella. Even if not by choice, she had opened up slightly. He thought she would shut down immediately after their parents stopped grilling them, but she seemed to make an effort to update him throughout the day. He wondered if it was because she just didn't want him breathing down her neck like Charlie, or if she just genuinely felt bad for how she had treated him along with everyone else since the Cullens left and was trying to fix it. He hoped it was the latter. He hoped she would continue to open up.
