No Going Back

The club was alive with music, the beat thrumming through the floor beneath Axel's feet. The lights flickered in waves, casting everything in a constant, shifting rhythm. Axel wasn't sure how she got here-how she ended up at this table, surrounded by laughter and chatter, with Freye and the others, all of them lost in the madness of the night. It wasn't like they were trying to make her feel left out, but there was something about the energy tonight that just felt different.

Rika and Lia were a little too quiet, too withdrawn. There was a hesitation in the way they spoke to each other. At first, Axel thought maybe it was just the noise of the club getting to them, but the longer she watched, the more she noticed. It was subtle-a glance shared between them that lasted just a second too long, the way their shoulders brushed when they thought no one was looking. Nothing overt, but enough to catch Axel's attention.

Axel didn't say anything at first. She was here to have fun, to enjoy the night, so she let it slide. She grabbed her drink, took a long sip, and let the warmth of it spread through her. The alcohol started to take the edge off, and the confusion about her friends faded, just a little.

Freye leaned in beside her, her lips close to Axel's ear, her voice smooth but with a teasing undertone. "You okay?" she asked, her breath warm against Axel's skin.

Axel smiled, nodding. "Yeah. Just... something's off tonight, that's all."

Freye raised an eyebrow but didn't press. Instead, she nudged Axel's arm, encouraging her to stand. "Let's dance. Maybe that'll shake it loose."

Axel didn't need any more convincing. She stood up, letting the music consume her. She let herself get lost in the rhythm of the night, the beat pushing her thoughts aside. She danced, enjoying the movement, letting the alcohol ease her mind.

But through the haze of the music and the flashing lights, Axel kept catching glimpses of Rika and Lia. They were always just a few steps apart, never too far, but never really close either. It was odd-like they were trying to stay connected without letting anyone see. Axel danced with Freye, but her mind kept drifting back to them.

She felt a pang of curiosity, something she couldn't shake. It was almost as if she knew there was something there, something they were keeping hidden. But what? Why?

Axel tried to ignore it, but it kept tugging at her. She danced harder, the sweat sticking to her skin as the alcohol loosened her body. But the more she moved, the more she noticed. Rika laughed at something Lia said, but her smile didn't quite reach her eyes. Lia's hand brushed against Rika's arm, but it was a touch that lingered a bit too long, an intimacy hidden in plain sight.

Axel shook her head, trying to clear her thoughts. It was probably nothing. Maybe she was just imagining things. But the more she watched, the more it didn't feel like nothing. It felt like something. A secret. A quiet, shared thing between them that Axel wasn't in on.

She danced with Freye again, pushing the thoughts from her mind, but they kept creeping back in. She watched as Rika leaned in close to Lia, speaking softly in her ear. And for the briefest moment, Axel could have sworn they both glanced at her, as if they were trying to see if she noticed.

She stopped dancing for a moment, her feet shifting on the floor as she scanned the room. Lia and Rika were standing close now, too close for comfort, the space between them almost non-existent. Axel could feel the tension in the air, something unspoken. She couldn't help it-she had to know. She had to figure out what was going on.

Axel turned back to Freye, her voice low, her brow furrowing in confusion. "Do you think something's going on with Rika and Lia?"

Freye looked at her, raising an eyebrow, but there was no immediate answer. She glanced over at Rika and Lia, as if processing what Axel had said. "What do you mean?"
