The soft hum of morning light filtered through the sheer curtains, casting warm, golden rays across the room. Freya stirred first, her body aching in the most satisfying way—a reminder of the passion and intensity that had consumed the night before. Her eyes fluttered open, landing on Axel’s sleeping form beside her.
Axel looked peaceful, her usual sharp edges softened in sleep. Her dark hair was a wild mess on the pillow, her features serene. Freya propped herself up on one elbow, a small smile tugging at her lips as she watched the steady rise and fall of Axel’s chest. It was rare to see her like this, unguarded and vulnerable.
She reached out tentatively, brushing a stray lock of hair away from Axel’s forehead. The touch was featherlight, but it was enough to stir Axel from her slumber. Her eyelids fluttered open, revealing a pair of sleepy, hazel eyes.
“Morning,” Axel murmured, her voice husky from sleep. A lazy grin stretched across her face as she took in the sight of Freya.
“Morning,” Freya replied softly. “How are you feeling?”
Axel stretched, her muscles protesting with a faint ache that brought a smirk to her lips. “Sore. But no regrets.”
Freya chuckled, leaning down to press a kiss to Axel’s cheek. “Serves you right for being insufferable last night.”
“Insufferable?” Axel teased, her arm snaking around Freya’s waist to pull her closer. “I seem to remember you enjoying yourself quite a bit.”
Freya rolled her eyes but didn’t pull away, settling against Axel’s side instead. The warmth of Axel’s body against hers was comforting, grounding her in a way she hadn’t expected.
For a while, they lay there in comfortable silence, the kind that spoke of an intimacy that went beyond words. Freya’s fingers absentmindedly traced patterns on Axel’s collarbone, her mind drifting back to the moments that had led them here.
“What’s on your mind?” Axel asked, breaking the quiet.
Freya hesitated for a moment before shrugging. “Just… this. It’s nice.”
Axel tightened her hold on Freya, her lips brushing against her temple. “Yeah. It is.”
Eventually, Freya’s stomach growled, breaking the serene atmosphere. Axel raised an eyebrow, her expression equal parts amused and smug. “Hungry?”
“A little,” Freya admitted, her cheeks flushing.
“I’ll get us something,” Axel offered, pressing a lingering kiss to Freya’s forehead before sliding out of bed.
Freya watched her go, her gaze lingering on Axel’s broad shoulders and the way her shirt hung loosely over her frame. A small, satisfied smile played on her lips as she leaned back against the pillows, savoring the moment.
Axel returned a few minutes later, balancing a tray with two steaming mugs of coffee, a plate of toast, and a bowl of fresh fruit. Freya sat up, her eyes lighting up at the sight.
“Breakfast in bed? Are you trying to spoil me?” Freya teased, accepting a mug from Axel.
“Don’t get used to it,” Axel said, though the smirk on her lips betrayed her amusement.
They ate in companionable silence, sharing small smiles and soft laughter as their fingers brushed while reaching for the same piece of fruit. It was a simple, domestic moment, but it felt significant in its own way.
After breakfast, Freya grabbed a book from the nightstand and settled back against the pillows. Axel leaned against her, her head resting on Freya’s shoulder as she scrolled through her phone.
“What are you reading?” Axel asked, tilting her head to glance at the page.
“It’s a romance novel,” Freya replied, holding up the cover.
Axel smirked. “Taking notes?”
Freya rolled her eyes but couldn’t help the smile tugging at her lips. She absentmindedly ran her fingers through Axel’s hair, the rhythmic motion lulling Axel into a state of relaxed contentment.
“You’re good at this,” Axel murmured, her eyes fluttering shut.
“At what?” Freya asked, her tone teasing.
“Making me feel… safe,” Axel admitted softly, her voice barely above a whisper.
Freya’s heart clenched at the vulnerability in Axel’s words. She pressed a kiss to the top of Axel’s head, her fingers never ceasing their gentle movements. “You make me feel the same way,” she admitted.
The morning stretched on, the world outside their little bubble seemingly forgotten. Freya couldn’t remember the last time she’d felt so at peace, so utterly content. She glanced down at Axel, her heart swelling with affection.
“I could get used to this,” she murmured.
Axel’s lips twitched into a small smile, though her eyes remained closed. “Me too, Freye. Me too.”
