The music thrummed through Axel’s chest as she stepped into the club, the bass vibrating under her skin, the flashing lights painting the room in bursts of color. The atmosphere was electric—screaming laughter, shouting, clinking glasses, and bodies moving to the rhythm of the night. Axel grinned, the kind of grin that felt genuine, carefree. Freya was right beside her, her presence a soft, grounding contrast to the chaos around them.
They were here for one reason: to forget about everything. To just let go. Axel wasn’t the type to get lost in the crowd often, but tonight felt different. The way Freya's hand brushed hers as they navigated through the sea of people, the warmth of her smile, the way their eyes would meet every now and then across the chaos—it felt perfect. The perfect escape.
"Let’s dance!" Freya’s voice was light, playful as she tugged at Axel’s sleeve, her wide, shining eyes sparkling with excitement.
Axel raised an eyebrow. "You sure? I thought you liked to keep it calm."
"I do," Freya responded with a grin. "But sometimes, you need to let the music take over. Come on, just one song."
With that, Axel couldn't resist. She followed Freya onto the dance floor, her arm sliding around Freya’s waist as they found a rhythm. They moved together, bodies swaying, laughing as the music seemed to take hold of them. Axel wasn’t usually one to get too wrapped up in dancing, but with Freya, everything felt natural, effortless. Freya’s energy was contagious, pulling Axel out of her shell, making her forget about the world outside this moment.
The night passed in a blur of lights and laughter, the two of them caught in their own world of fun and freedom. The song switched, the tempo slowed, and they found themselves standing at the edge of the dance floor, catching their breath.
"I’m going to grab a drink," Axel said, giving Freya a wink before heading toward the bar.
Freya nodded, smiling. "I’ll be right here."
Axel moved through the crowd, her eyes scanning the rows of bottles behind the bar, trying to decide what to get. She wasn't one to overthink it—vodka, whiskey, whatever was on hand. She ordered a drink and leaned against the bar, scanning the room. The place was packed, people everywhere, laughing, chatting, dancing.
Her drink in hand, Axel made her way back toward where she left Freya. But just as she got closer, something caught her eye.
Freya was talking to a guy.
Axel’s steps faltered. At first, it was just a casual exchange, nothing too alarming. But the longer Axel watched, the more her stomach twisted. The guy had his hand on Freya’s arm, his smile too confident, his body too close. Axel clenched her jaw, the tightness in her chest growing as she watched them.
It wasn’t just a conversation. They were flirting. Freya wasn’t pulling away, wasn’t showing any sign of discomfort. In fact, she was laughing. She was laughing at whatever the guy said, her eyes sparkling in a way that Axel had seen before—but not with him. Not like this.
Axel's grip tightened around her glass, her knuckles turning white. She should’ve walked up to them, made some excuse, and dragged Freya back to the dance floor, but she couldn’t. Not yet.
Instead, she watched as the guy leaned in closer, his voice low. Axel couldn't hear what he was saying, but Freya’s smile grew wider. The guy’s hand slid into Freya’s pocket, and Axel’s stomach dropped when he placed a piece of paper in there. Axel's heart skipped a beat. She couldn’t see it, but she knew exactly what it was. A number. A goddamn phone number.
Her grip on her glass tightened even more, the edges of the cup digging into her palm. Her breath was shallow now, her heart racing, and the anger bubbled up from a deep place, threatening to break free. She watched as the guy said something else to Freya, who chuckled softly, and Axel couldn’t take it anymore.
