Freya left Lucas's apartment with a coldness that pierced her very core. The satisfaction of exposing him was bittersweet. She had gathered the evidence—proof of every lie, every manipulation—but it came at a cost. Her stomach churned with the realization that she had just taken a knife to her past, slicing through the illusions Lucas had carefully built around them. The confrontation had left her exhausted, but there was no time to rest. Axel needed to know the truth, and she couldn’t put it off any longer.

Her fingers trembled as she unlocked her phone, sending the final compilation of Lucas’s lies to Axel's email. She made sure the email was clear—no room for confusion. She outlined every detail, every shred of Lucas’s deceit, and attached the proof. She had to make Axel understand. She had to make her believe her again.

Axel had been distant lately, their interactions strained, the trust that once flowed freely between them now cracked and fragile. Freya could feel the weight of their unspoken tension—Axel’s anger and hurt, but also the lingering doubt. It made Freya’s chest tighten every time she thought about it.

She pressed “send” and let out a long breath. Then she quickly typed out a message to Axel: We need to meet. Can’t do this over text.

She waited, anxiety gnawing at her. It wasn’t long before Axel’s reply buzzed on her phone.

I’ll be there in an hour.

Freya nodded to herself, her heart hammering in her chest. She had never been good at waiting, and this time was no different. She gathered herself, taking slow breaths to calm the hurricane inside her. She couldn’t afford to break now—not when she was so close. Not when she finally had the upper hand.

By the time Axel arrived, Freya was sitting on the edge of the couch, her phone held loosely in her hands. The moment the door creaked open, she stood up, her eyes scanning Axel’s face.

Axel entered, her eyes red and puffy, swollen from crying. Her expression was weary, defeated even, but there was something else in her gaze—a sharpness that hadn’t been there before. Freya could see it immediately: the pain Axel had been carrying. She could feel it in the air, thick like smoke.

“Freya,” Axel said quietly, her voice hoarse as if the weight of the last few days had stolen her breath away.

Freya didn’t answer right away. Instead, she stepped toward Axel, her gaze softening as she took in the sight of her. Axel’s face was blotchy, her eyes still glistening from the tears she hadn’t been able to wipe away. The sight of her hurt in a way that Freya hadn’t anticipated. She had expected anger, but this—it felt like something deeper, something more vulnerable.

“I’m sorry,” Axel whispered, but Freya shook her head.

“You don’t need to apologize,” Freya said, her voice steady despite the storm brewing inside her. “I’ve got something you need to see.”

Freya handed Axel the phone, the one that held all the damning proof. Axel hesitated, her eyes flicking from Freya’s hand to her face. Slowly, cautiously, Axel took the phone from her. The silence stretched between them like a bridge, fragile and trembling.

Freya watched as Axel’s fingers scrolled through the evidence—every message, every photo, every manipulation Lucas had carefully orchestrated. With every swipe, Axel’s face contorted in disbelief, her brows furrowing as she pieced together the lies Lucas had so artfully woven. It wasn’t just the photos or the altered messages—it was the realization that she had been played, that Freya had been right all along.

Finally, Axel stopped. Her fingers hovered over the screen, eyes glued to the words in front of her. She blinked rapidly, trying to process everything she had just read.

“I—I don’t…” Axel’s voice cracked, thick with emotion. “How could I have been so… so blind?” She choked on the words, her breath shallow as she stared at the phone.

Freya stepped closer, gently cupping Axel’s face with her hands, guiding her to look into her eyes. “You weren’t blind, Axel. He knew how to manipulate you. He knew how to make you doubt me.”

Axel’s lips trembled, tears spilling down her cheeks as her gaze flickered from the phone to Freya’s face. “I—I didn’t want to believe it. I thought I was losing you. I thought you were pushing me away.”

Freya’s heart clenched at the rawness of Axel’s words. She had always known Axel was strong, but this—this vulnerability, this pain—was something entirely different.

“I didn’t want to lose you, either,” Freya said softly, brushing the tears from Axel’s cheeks. “But I couldn’t keep hiding from the truth. And neither can you.”

Axel looked at her, eyes red and swollen from crying, her face still flushed with the aftermath of the emotional rollercoaster they had both been on. The hurt was evident in the way Axel held herself, like she was barely holding on to something fragile. But there was something else—something raw, something deep.

“Freya,” Axel began, her voice trembling as she took a step back. “I—I don’t know what to say. I was so sure you—”

“Axel,” Freya interrupted, her hands gently cupping Axel’s face once more. “You don’t need to say anything. I’m here. I’m not going anywhere. I just want you to know the truth. Lucas… he’s been manipulating you, manipulating us both. And I’ve had enough of it.”

Freya watched as Axel’s expression changed—faintly at first, but gradually, the understanding clicked. Axel’s lips parted, and she took a deep breath, holding it in like she was bracing for the impact of everything Freya had said.

“Freya, I…” Axel started, but the words didn’t come. She couldn’t seem to find the right ones, her thoughts spiraling.

Freya watched her, not giving Axel the time to retreat into her own guilt. “You were never the problem. We’ve been through so much already, and I’m not going to let him tear us apart anymore. You and me—this is real. Everything else is just noise.”

Axel’s face softened as she looked at Freya. For a moment, neither of them said anything. The silence was filled with unspoken words, the weight of everything they had gone through. It was a silence that could have broken them. But instead, it was a silence that bound them together, stronger than before.

“I’m sorry,” Axel finally whispered again, her voice barely above a whisper.

Freya smiled, her thumb brushing against Axel’s cheek. “Don’t be. We’re in this together, remember?”

And for the first time in what felt like forever, Axel nodded, a small but genuine smile breaking through the clouds of tension. She leaned in, resting her forehead against Freya’s, letting the warmth of the moment wash over them. They were no longer drowning in doubt and fear. The truth had been laid bare, and now it was time to rebuild.
