"Tension between us, just like picket fences" - Drake

January 13th, 2006

Katie:

Everything has been off as of late. Our group was fractured, and normalcy was no longer within reach.

My heart absolutely broke for Gibsie. He had always been so pure, so full of joy and kindness. And Lizzie verbally striked at him daily for years, when he was dealing with everything that had happened to him, having to keep everything inside, with constant reminders.

Sitting in the common room, you can blatantly see the division. I sat to the side with Aoife not wanting to get involved. Johnny, Gibsie and Claire sat on one side, and Lizzie, Joey and Hugh sat on the other. And Shannon and Patrick sat in the middle.

Aoife had declared that she was Switzerland, and refused to take sides. I hated this. I hated how, they had made our group into a war zone. Where we had to choose alliances, I was in a complicated situation because of where Hugh stood with Liz, but I wanted to support Gibsie and not her.

"God, this is dramatic." Aoife whispered to me.

"I know, you'd think this was a UN meeting." I reply.

"Can you imagine the BCS gang, doing this?" Aoife asked laughing, and I laughed to.

"Hey, how are you and Hugh?" She asked surprising me.

I freeze, we hadn't really talked since the night of the dance. We sat beside each other at lunch, and made small talk but we hadn't even kissed or held hands. We were in some kind of limbo, and I didn't know what to do. I took him not breaking up yet as a good sign, maybe he just needed some time and then he could explain, without having to go through the steps of a separation, or a break, like Joey and Aoife had done. I know I shouldn't want him back, but he's all I've ever known.

"Um, everything's been a little weird since the dance," I say, " he's close with Gibsie and Liz."

"Okay, you can tell me though, if there's something else." Aoife says, and I feel so grateful she's at Tommen now. I hadn't realized how much I missed having a real friend of my own at school.

"Of course." I say, "are you coming to the game tonight?"

"Yeah, and I invited Casey. And Shannon mentioned us hanging out here for a while, which would be fine by me, my parents have AJ for the evening." She laughs, "I love him more than life itself, but God I need a break sometimes."

"I can babysit him again, if you want some time." I offer, "he's like the sweetest baby ever."

"Only to his auntie Katie, you know, he has developed the habit of peeing on me, out of spite."

"He's not even five months old, he's not doing things out of spite, Aoife."

"He's Joey's son, of course he's already spiteful." She replies and I just laugh at the absurdity of it.
