"Have you talked to Scott about this...or Cora, at least?" Malia asked, sitting on the edge of Marisa's bed, watching her pace back and forth with the paper in her hands.
"No. And we can't tell them either. Cora, sure, but no one else, especially Scott. He'll never go for it."
"So we just...stop protecting these people, stop trying to save them?" Malia furrowed her brows at her, watching the wheels spin behind Marisa's eyes.
"I can bring one of them back, Malia. Look, I know you never got the change to meet them, but...Allison is our sister, and Calin was my best friend my entire life. I can bring one of them back."
"Have you even figured out which one you're gonna bring back."
"I'm not gonna choose at all, actually." Marisa shrugged, making Malia furrow her brows. "I'm gonna let the tree decide. The ritual calls for a part of the dead body or the dead body as a whole. I have their ashes in my necklace." Marisa held up her crystal necklace for Malia to see. "I don't have any of their ashes separate, so I actually have to do it this way. This way, I won't feel bad for choosing one or the other. The tree will make that decision for me."
"Okay, and what if you resurrect this like-half Calin, half Allison zombie-thing?" Malia cringed as she spoke.
"That won't happen."
"You can't trust the dread doctors. Even I know that. They're crazy." Malia pressed.
"As long as I do my best to keep the others from interfering with them, then I've done my part."
"And what happens if you can't do it, because I don't think you're gonna be able to stop Scott?"
"Then...then I don't know. The dread doctors kill me." Marisa shrugged, throwing her arms in the air, making Malia's eyes go wide. "Malia, please. Help me do this. I need this."
"We all want people to come back from the dead. Like id like to reverse killing my mother and sister, but I can't, and neither can you, and considering its me telling you that your crazy, I think that really means somethings gone very wrong here." She shrugged as she moved to her feet, opening up Marisa's bedroom door. "Don't do anything stupid, or I'll tell Scott."
"Malia!" Marisa called out when the door slammed after her, cutting Marisa off.
She stared at the door, watching it as it slowly blurred, ringing sounding in her ears.
"Give and take.
Give and take.
Give and take." It echoed, ringing in her ears like someone was talking a hammer to a bell inside her skull. The sound was so piercing, Marisa had to clasp her hands over her ears, squeezing her eyes shut.
"Give and take.
Give and get.
Give and take.
Give and take."
"Marisa.
Marisa." Marisa opened her eyes, seeing the map before her again, Scott's at her side, his hand on her arm. "You okay?" Marisa looked over at his soft, chocolate brown eyes.
"Yeah." She cleared her throat, shaking off the ache in her skull. "I just uh..I slept like crap last night." Scott released her arm, planting his feet beside her, his undivided attention on her.
"Where did you go Saturday night, and why did it take you so long to answer my messages?"
"I told you. The dread doctor hit me good, so I went and slept it off, and he broke my phone. I told Malia to tell you all I was fine when she found me."
