Everyone was gathered in the meeting room, the heavy tension in the air making the space feel smaller than it was. Lee stood at the head of the long table, explaining the plans he'd put together with his usual sharp efficiency.
Maps were spread out before us, marked with red lines and symbols that detailed the next steps, but my attention was elsewhere.
Across the table, Nova sat quietly, listening intently to Lee as he spoke, her brows slightly furrowed in focus.
To anyone else, she looked composed, serious—like she belonged here just as much as the rest of us.
But I saw more.
Every few seconds, her eyes would flicker toward me, and when our gazes met, a smile played at the corners of her lips, one that she tried to hide but failed.
I smirked back at her, my chest tightening with something I wasn't willing to put into words yet.
It was strange—unfamiliar—to be sitting in a room full of people and feeling so drawn to someone, so completely aware of her every movement.
It wasn't just about the sex. I'd be lying if I said that part of what we shared wasn't incredible, but there was something else too.
Something deeper. Something that made me certain she was the only woman I wanted by my side.
I wasn't hiding it, either. It was an open secret now, and I didn't care if anyone had a problem with it.
Nova was mine.
Everyone knew it. They could see it in the way I looked at her, in the way I always managed to keep her close. If anyone so much as thought about crossing that line, I'd make sure they never tried it again.
Lee's voice continued to drone on, breaking down the logistics of what was coming, but I barely heard him. My focus was still on her.
She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, glancing at me again, and this time I didn't bother hiding the smile that pulled at my lips.
Her eyes narrowed slightly in playful warning, like she was silently telling me to pay attention, but I could see the amusement there too.
I leaned back in my chair, letting my gaze linger on her. It was hard not to. Everything about her fascinated me.
The fire in her eyes, the sharp wit she always threw back at me, the way she held her own in a room full of people who'd tear most apart with just a look.
She wasn't afraid, and that was something I respected, something that drew me to her even more.
I'd never met a woman like Nova before. She challenged me in ways I didn't even know I needed, and every day, I found myself wanting to know more about her.
There was so much to her—layers I hadn't even begun to unravel yet. But I knew one thing for certain: I didn't want her to go anywhere.
We hadn't put a label on whatever this was, and I was fine with that. Fuck the labels. What mattered was how she made me feel—whole, like she was filling in all the parts of me that had been left empty for too long.
It scared me, if I was being honest, because I hadn't felt that way in years. Maybe I'd never felt it before at all.
But this? Her? It felt good.
And maybe, just maybe, it was leading us to something even better.
"We'll take the D.C. cartel while they're attending an event at this location." Lee pointed to a marked point on the blueprint sprawled across the table, the room falling silent as everyone listened.
