I lay on the bed, holding Hailey gently in my arms as I stroked her hair, murmuring soft reassurances to her. She was awake now, though her eyelids were heavy, her movements sluggish, and her voice barely above a whisper.
The moment she had opened her eyes and looked at me, my heart had leapt in relief, a feeling so powerful it almost knocked the breath out of me.
Dr. Kendrick had been by earlier to check on her, confirming that she was recovering but still weak and drowsy from everything her body had endured.
He'd instructed me to make sure she stayed in bed and rested for the next few days. I didn't need to be told twice; I wasn't leaving her side.
Hailey stirred against me, shifting to sit up a little straighter as her eyes flicked toward Dominik, who was still standing nearby. She squinted at him, her head tilting slightly.
"Hey, you're that guy that took me in a car."
Dominik let out a low chuckle, stepping closer.
"You've got a good memory."
"Hailey," I said quickly, brushing her arm gently. "It's okay. Dominik's...someone we can trust now. He saved us from Viktor."
Her eyes darted back and forth between me and Dominik, clearly skeptical.
"Wait...are you two sleeping together?"
The question hit me like a slap, and I stared at her in shock, my cheeks heating up.
"Hailey!" I cried, my voice betraying both embarrassment and disbelief. I shot a glance at Dominik, who was biting back a grin.
"What?" Hailey said innocently, shrugging. "If you are, it'd explain why you haven't arrested him yet. You know, for having us kidnapped from the safe house."
Dominik couldn't hold back his laugh this time, and I immediately shot him a warning glare.
"We're not just sleeping together," I said firmly, though my voice softened as I added, "We...love each other."
The words hung in the air for a moment, and I turned to Dominik, who was watching me with a tender expression.
"And we're also expecting a baby soon." He quickly added, with a proud grin,
Hailey's jaw dropped, her wide eyes darting to me in shock.
"What?" she exclaimed, her voice a mix of disbelief and something that almost sounded like amusement.
I groaned and glared at Dominik.
"I was going to tell her," I muttered under my breath.
Dominik shrugged, his grin unrepentant.
"Sorry," he said, not sounding sorry at all. "I'm just... excited."
Hailey sat up straighter, her energy suddenly returning despite her weakened state. She looked between the two of us like she was piecing together a puzzle she hadn't realized existed.
