My hand trembled as I gripped the stick, staring at the two red lines that had appeared in the center.
Positive.
The word rattled in my head, over and over again, like a bell that wouldn't stop ringing. I couldn't move, couldn't blink, couldn't even breathe properly as I stared at the result that confirmed what I hadn't been ready to believe.
I'm pregnant.
I looked up at myself in the mirror, hoping for some kind of answer or reaction, but all I saw was a stranger staring back. My face was pale, my eyes wide and unblinking.
My thoughts were racing in every direction, colliding and tangling until I couldn't tell what I was feeling.
Shock. Fear. A flicker of something else I wasn't ready to name.
This wasn't supposed to happen. Not now. Not like this.
I thought back to the last few weeks—the constant nausea, the fatigue I brushed off as stress from searching for Hailey, the tension of being back with Dominik and his people.
It had all felt so overwhelming, but I'd chalked it up to the chaos surrounding me. The reality hadn't even crossed my mind until this morning, when I woke up feeling violently nauseous and barely made it to the bathroom before throwing up.
That's when it hit me.
I had missed my period this month.
Somehow, in all the madness, I'd completely overlooked it. And now, staring at the evidence in my hand, I couldn't ignore it anymore.
It was Dominik's. Of course, it was his. There was no doubt in my mind. He was the only person I'd been with in the past few months, the only person I wanted to be with.
But what now?
Today was the day. The mission to rescue Hailey was already planned, and Dominik would be there by my side. There was no time for this—for the conversation that would inevitably follow if I told him.
I exhaled shakily and dropped the stick into the trash can under the sink, watching as it disappeared beneath a crumpled tissue. This wasn't something I could deal with right now. There was too much at stake, too much on the line.
Later, I told myself. Later, when Hailey was safe, and the weight of Viktor Volkov was no longer hanging over us, I'd tell Dominik. But not today.
Straightening, I splashed cold water on my face and forced myself to breathe. I couldn't afford to be distracted. Hailey needed me. Dominik needed me.
After a few moments, I left the bathroom and headed back to my room to get ready. I pulled on my gear, securing my weapons and focusing on the task ahead. My hands were steady now, my resolve firm.
There would be time to deal with this later. For now, I had a mission to complete.
OoO
Everything was in place. Backup was positioned, weapons were secured, and the air was thick with anticipation. We were on our way to the address Viktor had texted earlier, Keith behind the wheel, with Dominik and me sitting in tense silence.
Despite the mission ahead, my mind refused to focus. All I could think about was the small pregnancy stick I'd thrown away this morning and the two red lines that changed everything.
I glanced out the window, trying to distract myself, but the weight of Dominik's presence beside me made it impossible to escape my thoughts.
Then, without warning, his hand slid across the seat and found mine, his fingers intertwining with mine in a firm, reassuring grip.
