INDIANA

My whole body froze when the dark figure finally stepped out from the shadows. The small ray of sunshine from the windows high up on the wall cast a warm glow on his face, and my lips parted in shock.

Standing before me was the most handsome man I'd ever seen. I'd met countless men in the past who were good-looking, but this guy was on a whole other level.

His eyes...they were the first thing I noticed when he stepped into the light to reveal his face.

I'd never seen anything like them. Kind of mismatched too.

His left eye was a striking shade of deep emerald green, and his right eye was hazel, with warm tones of amber and honey blending seamlessly.

I struggled to swallow the lump forming in my throat as we continued to stare at each other without a word.

"Dom," Lee greeted with a heavy breath. "What are you doing here? I thought you were back at the main house."

The mysterious man, Dom, clicked his tongue before shifting his gaze from me to look at Lee instead.

"Thought I'd come by and take a look at our new supplies myself. Although this—" he paused while pointing his gun at the damage done inside the warehouse, "—is not the surprise I was expecting. I'm quite disappointed in you for letting this happen."

"It was an ambush," Lee stated matter-of-factly.

"There hasn't been any ambush for the past couple of years until you were in charge, which tells me everything I need to know about how you've been running this place and letting outsiders discover our location."

Lee opened his mouth to argue back, but one look from Dom immediately shut him up. I don't know who this guy is, but the powerful aura radiating from him tells me everything I need to know.

He holds more power than Lee or anyone else in this place, and judging by the way Lee and the girls dare not say anything that might anger him, they're obviously afraid of him.

Anyone else would feel the same way. I mean, aside from the fact that he's insanely beautiful, the man gives off a dangerous energy—like he could easily take someone's life by barely lifting a finger, and that's terrifying.

"Clean up this mess," Dom said. "Kat, take Alexa to the main house and have Dr. Kendrick take a look at that wound."

Everyone immediately sprang into action, and I just stood there, confused. I didn't know whether I should wait for him to tell me what to do next or just follow Lee because I work for him.

I proceeded to do the latter, but Dom stepped in my way, nudging his gun toward my shoulder.

"Who's this?" Dom asked aloud, and suddenly everyone stopped moving and looked back at us.

"My newest recruit," Lee answered confidently.

Dom raked his eyes over me from top to bottom, not in an intimate way, but more like he was assessing me, trying to figure me out.

"What's your name?" he asked.

"Nova," Lee answered from behind, and my eyes snapped toward him.

Dom slightly tilted his head to the side, glancing back at Lee, and I watched as Lee's expression swiftly changed from uncomfortable to apologetic.

"Sorry," Lee mumbled, and then Dom turned his head back to me.

"Your name?" he repeated.

"Nova. Nova West, sir." It felt necessary to address him like that since he clearly holds the most authority in the room, judging by everyone's reaction.

Dom gave me a long stare that made me shift uncomfortably on my feet. Then, he slowly nodded before turning around and following the others out.

I released a small sigh of relief but barely took four steps forward when my face was suddenly confronted by a gun. My heart dropped in surprise as I stared at him in confusion.

He was aiming it straight at my face, and my whole body froze on the spot.

No no no no no.

This can't be happening. Please don't tell me he knows that I'm a cop...

The others had stopped near the entrance and turned around to see what was happening. I clenched my fists tightly, trying to come up with an excuse before he pulled the trigger.

That is, if he knows who I really am.

But after the longest minute had passed, he tilted the gun to the side of my face, aiming at the background behind me instead.

Then, he pulled the trigger.

I flinched at how loud the gunshot sounded near my ears and squeezed my eyes shut tightly. Only when I heard a faint 'hmph' behind me did I finally open them again.

Dom was already staring at me, and he lowered the gun before looking at something behind me—or rather, someone.

"Almost got yourself killed there. Watch your back more carefully next time," he said to me before turning around and walking out of the warehouse.

I glanced behind me and saw one of the attackers lying in a different position, with a fresh gunshot wound to the head, blood starting to spill all over the ground.

I scoffed to myself. He just saved my life and didn't even give me the chance to thank him. But I highly doubt he expects me to.

As weird as it is that I found that attractive, Mr. Underboss Number Two and I are not off to a great start. The goal was to leave them impressed with me so that they'll let me in closer to their inner circle.

I was still trying to get Lee to trust me enough, and now this dude decides to show up?

This mission just got a whole lot more difficult than I thought.
