Chapter Twenty

A whole day has passed since we captured that rogue and I haven't managed to see Kayden except for a few minutes during dinner yesterday. This is the second day of just wandering around the house aimlessly searching for things to keep me entertained. I read books from the library and even watched a movie or two, but nothing has helped to lessen the weight on my chest or the desire to see Kayden. I didn't know it was possible to miss someone who was only a few feet away from me, but I didn't want to disturb his work. So instead, I currently find myself baking to keep myself busy, so I won't go up and disturb him.

I don't know when I first began baking but I found myself in the kitchen at some point and I just never left. Upon seeing the abundance of ingredients inside the kitchen I suddenly found myself suddenly cooking and it wasn't long after making food for myself that I started baking. The only time I left the kitchen was when I went back upstairs to retrieve a Bluetooth speaker that Amelia got for me when we were at the mall that day. After that, I was in the kitchen listening to music and dancing around the kitchen all the while I cooked and cleaned up after myself. It helped to push back the urge to barge into my mate's office to be near him so instead I just tried to keep myself busy.

I somehow managed to make cinnamon rolls and an assortment of different cookies, including chocolate chip, sugar, M&M, and a batch of oatmeal and raisin cookies. I made all these things to keep myself and my brain busy but now looking at everything completed and put on the cooling rack all I can think about is my mate and how he hasn't left his office since early this morning with people coming and going from his office but never him. Yesterday it was Amelia in his office, and he was gone all day but when he did come back, he had a dark and solemn expression on his face. He barely even acknowledged my existence except for telling me he was sorry before kissing my forehead and disappearing into his office for the rest of the night. If this had been a few days ago I would have been thrilled and welcomed this kind of indifference but now I can't help but feel my chest clench with sadness and loneliness by his actions.

I debated with myself internally for a while before I finally decided, but I'm not sure whether it was the right one or not. I grabbed a plate and put one of each type of dessert on the plate and a fork before heading toward my mate's office. I stood in front of the door debating with myself if this was truly the right choice to make. I took a deep breath before knocking lightly on the door. I heard Kayden's deep and gruff voice come from the other side of the door "I thought I said I am not to be disturbed unless it is important." I felt my heartbeat quicken at the sound of his voice and I felt regret grip at my chest at his words as I cursed myself for being so stupid to think this was a good idea. "I'm sorry. I'll leave you alone then."

I heard the sound of scuffling feet against the hardwood flooring as I spoke and before I had a chance to turn around the door to his office suddenly swung open. I saw Kayden standing before me when the door opened, looking slightly disheveled. His black hair was standing up somewhat like he had been running his fingers through it repeatedly. He wore a plain black sweater with rolled sleeves, revealing his tan tattoo-covered arms and his gold watch attached to his wrist. He also wore gray slacks with black socks and black dress shoes. He looked like a true businessman instead of a leader of wolves who had been dealing with a rogue wolf all day.

When I saw him, I felt my heart skip a beat at his handsome face and even though he appeared disheveled he still looked incredibly attritive almost like a Greek god was standing in front of me in all his glory. I just stood there staring at him for a minute without saying anything because as soon as I saw him it was like I had forgotten how to speak. When he noticed my reaction, he smiled at me and raised his eyebrow "Cat got your tongue?" When he spoke, I suddenly remembered my words but not before rolling my eyes at his sly comment "Ha ha very funny," I said sarcastically.
