You fumble with the doorknob and finally manage to open the front door of the monastery. You're half an hour late to the ninjas' party, and the room is packed with people laughing, dancing, and just sitting and talking.
"I'm here!" you call. "Sorry I'm late!"
"Oh, good, y/n!" Jay says. He stands up and sticks a covered box in your face. "Here—pick something out of this box."
You give him a confused look. "Uh, why?"
Jay shakes the box. "I'll tell you in a minute. Just do it!"
"Fine." You stick your hand into the box and feel around until you find a flat, round object with jagged edges. Curious, you close your hand around it and pull it out.
"What did you get?" Jay asks. You hold up the object—a small gear—and the entire room fills with a chorus of "Ooooooohhhhhh!"
Jay grabs your arm and pulls you forward, laughing. "Come on, y/n. This is gonna be good!"
"What?" you demand. Jay ignores you and steers you through the crowd. "Where are we going?" That's when you catch sight of the broom closet near the back of the room.
You try to tug free from Jay's grip. "Oh, no. No, no, no. I am not going in there."
"Yeah, you are!" Lloyd shouts from across the room. You try to pull free from Jay's grip and Kai helps him drag you toward the closet.
"Hey, wait! I don't even know what game we're playing!" you yelp as the others shove you inside. The door closes behind you and locks.
"Greetings, y/n. I see you have arrived."
You jump and let out an impressive shriek.
"Sorry! I didn't intend to startle you," the other person says. You calm down once you realize who it is.
"It's okay, Zane. I was just a little freaked out," you explain. "So, what are we doing in here?"
"I believe we are playing Seven Minutes in Heaven," Zane replies.
"Yippee," you mutter sarcastically. "It's not you," you add quickly. "I just really don't like this game."
You suppose you shouldn't complain. Out of all the ninja, Zane's your closest friend. Actually, he's your closest friend in general. He has been ever since he saved you from being eaten by the Great Devourer a few years ago. Cole and Kai still joke about how he was smitten by a damsel in distress...
Wait. Are you blushing? There's no reason for you to be blushing. Zane's your best friend in the world, and probably one of the only people you would want to be stuck in a closet with for any amount of time.
Something brushes against you, and you yelp.
"Y/n, are you all right?" Zane asks.
"Sorry," you mumble. "I'm a little claustrophobic."
"Which would explain why you do not like Seven Minutes in Heaven," Zane says.
You nod. "Right the first time."
Zane takes your hand. "Does this help?"
You squeeze his hand. "Yeah, thanks."
You and Zane stand in awkward silence for a minute. Finally, you decide to say something.
"So...what's going on with you and Pixal lately? I haven't had a chance to catch up with you properly since you got back from Chen's island."
"We had trouble seeing eye-to-eye regarding...certain issues, so Cyrus Borg built her a new body," Zane explains. "I have not seen her in quite a while."
There's another awkward silence. You feel your face going red again when you realize that Zane's still holding your hand, but you don't make a move to remove it.
Finally, you can't stand the silence anymore. "So...uh...what else is new with you?"
Zane sighs. "I understand that I am not the most exciting companion."
You stare at him incredulously. "Not exciting? You're a nindroid! You've got a cool falcon! You sacrificed yourself to destroy the Overlord and then rebuilt yourself out of titanium! You fought off an army of ghosts from the Cursed Realm! How could anyone think you're not exciting?"
Zane shifts uncomfortably. "Speaking of exciting, y/n, there is something I must tell you."
When he doesn't make any move to continue, you put a hand on his shoulder. "You know you can tell me anything, Zane. Spit it out."
"Well, I...I..." unexpectedly, Zane leans in and kisses you. "I love you, y/n. I have always loved you."
Your cheeks flame red, and you're grateful for the darkness in the closet. Zane is in love with you?
"I know you do not feel the same, but I needed to—" Zane cuts off when you kiss him gently.
"I do love you, Zane," you say quietly. "I've always loved you. I just didn't know it until now."
You and Zane share another kiss, one that's long and gentle and sweet. It's not until you pull apart that you realize the door is open and everyone at the party is staring at you.
"Look who finally broke the friendzone!" Jay laughs.
"That was not seven minutes!" you yelp.
Cole cracks up. "Yes it was! You two were so wrapped up in each other that you didn't even notice when Lloyd opened the closet!"
"He's still gagging in the kitchen!" Kai adds.
"Serves him right!" you shoot back. "Come on, Zane, let's get out of here."
(Okay @moonflower16666, here is a nice, fluffy SMIH for you.
The rest of you—don't get used to it.)
