A Certain Spark

B/f/n shivered and wondered for the dozenth time in as many minutes why she let y/n talk her into this sort of thing. This was no time for ice cream. It was just too cold.

“Y/n,” b/f/n moaned, “it’s the middle of November. Face it, ice cream season is over.”

Y/n popped another spoonful of sundae into her mouth. “Don’t be ridiculous, b/f/n. I wouldn’t eat this outside, but in here it’s fine.”

Yeah, b/f/n thought. Says the girl who runs around in the snow with only a jacket on.

“Whatever,” she said out loud. “The rest of the sundae’s all yours.”

Y/n attacked the remaining half of the sundae while b/f/n went to the counter and ordered herself a hot chocolate to warm herself back up. After paying and getting her hot chocolate, b/f/n was on her way back to their booth when the door opened and five people walked in. B/f/n grinned when she saw Zane at the rear of the group. A little payback for y/n was in order.

“Hey,” b/f/n said casually as she slid into the booth. “Isn’t that Zane?” Y/n sat up straight and turned to look at the counter. Just you wait, girl, b/f/n thought. I haven’t even started yet.

B/f/n stood up and waved her arms to get Zane’s attention. “Hi, Zane!”

“B/f/n,” y/n whispered. “Sit down!”

B/f/n glanced at her. “Come on, live a little!” Y/n groaned and put her head down on the table. She hated getting attention. B/f/n ignored her. Some attention would be good for y/n. Especially attention from her future boyfriend. “Zane! Over here!”

Zane came to a stop next to their booth, with his friends in tow. B/f/n’s eyes immediately settled on one of them, a guy in a red jacket.

B/f/n winked at Zane and pointed to y/n. Zane flushed and said nothing until one of his friends nudged his shoulder.

“Greetings, y/n,” Zane finally said.

Y/n looked up and blushed. “Hi, Zane.”

“So you’re Zane’s girlfriend, the famous y/n,” Red Jacket said. B/f/n looked at him again, assessing him. Spiky brown hair, bright hazel eyes, muscles visible even through his jacket. He’s cute, she decided.

“Y/n is not my girlfriend! How many times must I explain this to you?” Zane protested. Red Jacket snickered. Obviously, this sort of byplay had been going on between them for a while, just like with b/f/n and y/n. Everyone knew that y/n and Zane liked each other, but the two of them just wouldn’t admit it.

A guy in a blue jacket snorted. “Uh-huh. That’s why you won’t stop talking about her.” B/f/n glanced at him, then dismissed him and went back to looking at Red Jacket.

“Ah…” Zane began. He and y/n both looked like they wished they could sink into the ground and disappear. “Where are my manners? These are my friends Jay, Cole, Kai, and Lloyd.”

B/f/n glanced at Kai again and added his name to the growing list of things she liked about him. He was looking at her now, and she winked at him.

Y/n was finally recovering from her embarrassment. “Nice to meet you. This is b/f/n.”

“Hi, there.” B/f/n decided to throw subtlety out the window and gave Kai her most brilliant smile. Kai reddened slightly and ducked his head.

The guy in black (b/f/n couldn’t remember his name) sighed. “Are we all going to stand here, or can we sit down and eat?”

“No problem,” b/f/n said. “You can sit with us. We’ve got plenty of room.” Thank goodness we got a booth…

It took a little work, but everyone fit into the booth. B/f/n managed to snag a seat next to Kai. They had to squeeze together to fit, but that was all the better as far as b/f/n was concerned. Especially if she happened to sit a bit closer to Kai than was absolutely necessary.

“So, Kai,” b/f/n said, turning on the charm full-blast. “What do you do for fun?”

“Well…um…I’m a ninja,” Kai said, blushing furiously. B/f/n reluctantly decided that she’d better turn down the charm. Otherwise, she’d never get a coherent sentence out of him.

B/f/n leaned closer. “Sounds interesting. Tell me all about it.”

B/f/n and Kai laughed and talked until the others were ready to leave. The more they talked, the more b/f/n liked Kai. She was sad to have to say goodbye, although she was comforted by the phone number Kai had slipped into her hand as they left the diner.

“So…” y/n said casually. “You and Kai looked pretty happy back there.”

Bf/n suddenly felt shy. “We were just talking, y/n.”

A grin spread across y/n’s face. “Mm-hm. I don’t know…I think he has a crush on you.”

“This is payback for teasing you about Zane, isn’t it?”

“Yep!” y/n agreed cheerfully.

B/f/n decided to ignore the teasing. She liked Kai. There was a certain spark between them, and she couldn’t wait to see where it would lead.

(Hope you all liked!)
