As I stood in front of the mirror, adjusting the final touches on the costume, I couldn't help but feel a bit of nervous excitement bubbling up. The black and pink design, complete with the love hearts, was starting to feel more like a part of me. Grumbot's prototype watch-now embedded with magical sensors to monitor my energy and warn me if I was overexerting myself-sat snugly on my wrist, a reminder that I wasn't alone in this.
Mumbo had really outdone himself with the technology, but now, I was facing something that seemed far more daunting than any costume. The announcement had barely made a ripple when it was first made-everyone expected a new face to fill in for Hot Guy for a while, but when it came to proving I could handle the role? That's when things took a sharp turn.
Apparently, some of the others had their doubts, and Xisuma had made it clear that I'd need to prove myself in a sparring match. As I finished tugging on my gloves, the door to the dressing room creaked open, and there stood Xisuma, dressed in his usual attire, with an unreadable expression on his face.
"You ready?" he asked, his tone calm but with an edge of something I couldn't place.
"Guess I don't have much of a choice now, do I?" I replied, my voice light despite the nerves running through me.
He nodded and stepped aside, gesturing for me to follow. "There's a crowd waiting. They've been eager to see the new Cute Guy in action, and they want to know if you're really up to Hot Guy's level."
I couldn't help but snort. "Right. No pressure."
"None at all," he replied with a smirk, though I could tell he was genuinely trying to reassure me. "Just show them what you've got. Don't worry about impressing anyone. Just be yourself. That's what they'll respect."
I gave him a quick nod, but deep down, I knew that wasn't quite what they were all expecting. They weren't just going to respect me because I was me-they were looking to see if I had what it took to fill Hot Guy's shoes, even temporarily.
We stepped into the main hall, where a small circle of heroes and associates had gathered. In the center stood someone I hadn't met yet, a tall, muscular figure who had to be one of the other heroes in the association. His posture was confident, but not cocky-a good sign.
As I stepped into the ring, feeling the pressure of all the eyes on me, I finally got a better look at my sparring partner. She stood with a smirk, her fiery red hair pulled back into a tight ponytail, her eyes sparking with energy and confidence. This wasn't just any sparring match-this was going to be a test of wits, agility, and creativity.
Xisuma's voice cut through the tense air. "Cleo's challenge is simple," he explained, gesturing to the redhead. "Her goal is to get you out of the ring. Your challenge, Cute Guy, is to place a heart-shaped sticker on her somewhere. You're not allowed to just knock her out or overpower her. It's all about creativity, speed, and technique."
I blinked, processing the information. "A heart-shaped sticker?" I asked, looking down at my costume, where I realized I had a few extra stickers stashed in the pockets of my outfit.
Xisuma nodded. "Exactly. You've got to get one on her-somewhere-before she can get you out of the ring. It's a test of your ability to think on your feet and use your surroundings to your advantage." He smiled a little, clearly amused by the challenge he'd set up. "No pressure, but everyone's watching."
Cleo, standing across from me, couldn't help but laugh. Her personality practically crackled with energy. "This is going to be fun," she said, her voice full of mischief. "I hope you've got more than speed in your arsenal, Cute Guy."
