I moved quickly through the streets, the cool night air cutting through my feathers as I rounded the corner. My instincts were sharp, and my thoughts raced. Watcher-that's what the woman had been talking about. Something about glowing eyes, too fast, too shadowy... It all fit.

As I neared the alley, I saw him-just a guy, standing there, almost like he was waiting for something. His posture was rigid, his eyes vacant. The air around him seemed to ripple with an unnatural energy.

No.

I didn't have time to think, just react. The Watchers weren't something to be taken lightly, especially when they were about to possess someone. They turned people into mindless vessels for their twisted power. That would've been a disaster, and I couldn't let it happen.

I stepped forward, my fingers already moving to weave the spell. The magic around me hummed as I reached for the dispelling incantation, focusing all my energy into pushing the foreign presence out of his body.

The air around me thickened, the tension rising like a storm. My magic collided with the dark force, and I could feel it trying to push back. But I was faster, more focused. With a final burst of willpower, the shadowy presence recoiled, evaporating into nothingness as the man collapsed to the ground, gasping for air.

I rushed to his side, kneeling down to check on him. His eyes were wide with fear, his chest heaving as he struggled to catch his breath.

"Hey, hey, you're okay now," I said softly, placing a hand on his shoulder to steady him. "You're safe."

He looked up at me, his face pale. "What... what just happened? I... I don't remember anything."

I exhaled, tension still lingering in my muscles. "You were being possessed by something dark. It's over now."

The guy just stared at me, his confusion turning to realization. "A what..? Something dark?"

I nodded grimly. "Yeah. But you're safe. The thing that was controlling you is gone."

He shuddered but seemed to regain his composure. "I don't know what I would've done if you hadn't been here."

I offered him a quick smile. "It's my job."

Just as I was about to stand and help him to his feet, I heard a familiar voice behind me.

Of course, I had switched into my Cute Guy hero costume, so I wasn't dressed up as a café worker. I made sure to change out of my uniform before stepping outside, partly to keep my identity under wraps, and partly because I didn't want to risk anyone recognizing me while I was dealing with the Watcher situation. My blue-and-pink costume with its heart-shaped designs felt more like me than the café uniform ever had. I checked my Grumbot watch to see how I was doing, mentally keeping track of the time, and maybe some magic stats as well.

"Cute Guy!" the watch read. I squinted, a little confused by the message. Was it an alert? A reminder? I glanced around, trying to make sense of it, when suddenly I saw him: StarVoid.

He was sprinting towards me, moving faster than I expected. His familiar figure emerged from the shadows, and before I could even fully process what was happening, Xisuma-now in his StarVoid persona-was standing right in front of me, his face serious but with a glint of concern in his eyes.

"Hey, you okay?" he asked, his breath steady despite his quick pace.

"Yeah," I said, glancing back at the man who'd run off. He was nowhere in sight now, disappearing into the alleyway. "I handled the situation. The Watcher didn't get too far before I caught up with him."

Xisuma raised an eyebrow, but his gaze was sharp as he took in the alley's empty space. "Good. You made sure he was alright, right?"

I nodded. "He's fine, just a bit shaken up. He didn't know what was happening to him. But I'm still wondering why they'd target him. He didn't seem like a typical victim."

StarVoid's expression darkened slightly as he mulled it over. "We need to be careful. The Watchers don't attack randomly; there's always a reason. Let's talk about this more later. We don't know if others are involved, and they might be keeping an eye on this guy for a reason."

I agreed with a small sigh, already knowing how deep this could go. I couldn't let my guard down, not even for a second. "What's the plan then? Should we-"

Before I could finish, Xisuma held up his hand, cutting me off. "We need to get back to base, figure out what's going on, and make sure that doesn't happen again. But-" He paused, looking at me with a half-smile, "You're not in your usual outfit, are you?"

I looked down at my costume, realizing he was right. "Nope, I'm not. I didn't want anyone seeing Cute Guy and thinking I was still working at the café."

Xisuma chuckled, his tone a little lighter now. "I guess you're right. Wouldn't want to blow your cover while you're out saving people." His smile quickly turned into a more serious expression, though, his eyes scanning the street for any other potential threats. "But if we're going to keep working together on this, we'll need to be extra cautious. Especially now that you're out there in the open."

I nodded, adjusting my costume. "Yeah, I get it. No more mistakes. I'll be careful."

As we made our way back to the base, I couldn't shake the feeling that the Watchers had only just started moving. This wasn't the last I'd see of them. Whatever they were after, I was going to figure it out-no matter what.

As I walked alongside Xisuma, my Grumbot watch suddenly buzzed, pulling my attention away from the conversation we were having. I glanced at the alert and noticed that I was using a significant amount of magic. I frowned, feeling the weight of it all-my magic reserves were starting to dwindle, and I could feel it physically. My limbs felt heavier, my thoughts slightly clouded. It was always harder to keep my anonymity when I was pushing my magic to its limits. The energy it took to maintain the illusion of being Cute Guy, plus the constant vigilance needed to stay hidden, drained me more than I liked to admit.

Xisuma must have noticed the slight change in my demeanor. "You alright?" he asked, glancing over at me with a knowing expression.

"Yeah, just... magic usage," I muttered, offering a small smile to mask the exhaustion creeping in. "I've got to keep my cover, and it's... a little more difficult than I expected."

"Just be careful," he warned, his voice steady. "You're pushing yourself too hard, and it won't end well if you burn out. Remember, you can't do this alone. We're here to help."

I nodded, grateful for the concern but not entirely sure how to lighten the load. We continued walking back to the Heroes Association, but by the time we arrived, I was dragging.

When I finally made it to Mumbo's office, the soft lighting and familiar scent of the place made me feel like I could finally relax. It felt like a safe space, even with all the tension lingering in the air. Without a second thought, I collapsed onto the couch, too tired to care about anything else. I didn't even bother to take off my costume, too far gone to think about the small details.

I closed my eyes for a moment, just to rest, but before I knew it, I was out cold. The exhaustion from the day's events-fighting, keeping secrets, managing magic-caught up with me in a way I didn't expect. The couch felt like the most comfortable place in the world as I drifted off, finally allowing myself a brief reprieve.

It wasn't long before I fell into a deep sleep, the kind of sleep that I knew I needed, even if it was just for a little while. I was safe, for now, and that was all that mattered.
