Snuggle Up

It started with a single, well-aimed throw—one of the smaller heart-shaped pillows sailing through the air and plopping harmlessly against Mumbo’s back. He didn’t react.

Grian grinned.

That was his first mistake.

Another pillow followed. Then another. Then another. I contributed once, just for the fun of it, but mostly, I just watched as Grian took great amusement in absolutely bombarding Mumbo with tiny plush hearts.

Mumbo, for his part, barely reacted at first, too distracted by whatever blueprint he was sketching out at the table. A small twitch of his shoulder. A brief pause as he blinked in confusion. A slow, dawning realization when yet another pillow hit the back of his head.

Then, finally—

"Are you throwing things at me?" Mumbo asked, deadpan, turning in his chair.

Grian, looking far too innocent, gasped. "Me? No! I would never!"

I scoffed. "He totally is."

"You traitor," Grian hissed, eyes wide with mock betrayal.

"You threw the last ten pillows, Grian."

"Allegedly!"

Mumbo sighed, rubbing his temples. "You two are actual children."

Before he could turn back around, Grian chucked one last pillow—this time, directly at his face.

It hit with a soft plop.

Silence.

Then—Mumbo inhaled sharply, his chair scraping back.

"You absolute menace," he muttered, grabbing a pillow off the couch.

I had exactly one second to register what was happening before the pillow war began in earnest.

Mumbo barely had time to react before Grian pounced, yanking him into the heart-shaped monstrosity of a nest with surprising strength.

"Wait—no—Grian, don’t you dare—!"

Too late.

With a triumphant chirp, Grian latched onto Mumbo like a victorious bird of prey, his wings puffing up as he curled into him. Mumbo, now effectively trapped, let out a long, long sigh, looking at me with a face that screamed why have you forsaken me?

I shrugged. "You let your guard down, mate. Rookie mistake."

"This is ridiculous," Mumbo muttered, attempting to wiggle free. He failed miserably, Grian simply adjusting with each movement to keep him locked in place. "How are you this strong?"

Grian smirked, lazily draping a wing over him like a blanket. "Magic, Mumbo. You wouldn't understand."

"Oh, I understand plenty, and I refuse to be part of whatever this is—"

"Shhh, shhh," Grian hushed, reaching up to place a single gloved finger against Mumbo’s lips. "Nest time. Accept your fate."

Mumbo groaned, flopping back in defeat. "This is my life now, isn’t it?"

"Yes," I said, smirking. "Yes, it is."

I leaned back, arms crossed, watching the two of them struggle in the nest of absurdly soft heart-shaped pillows. Grian had fully wrapped his wings around Mumbo now, effectively cocooning him in a feathery, inescapable prison. Mumbo squirmed, tried to pry the wings apart, and even attempted to bribe Grian with redstone components. Nothing worked.

"This is ridiculous," Mumbo huffed, attempting one last, desperate escape.

Grian only pulled him in tighter, smug as ever. "Nope. Nest time."

I couldn’t help but chuckle at the sight. "You know, I could leave at any time," I pointed out. "You’re not getting me in that thing."

Grian’s eyes gleamed with mischief. "Oh, I wouldn't be so sure about that, Hot Guy..."

That was all the warning I got before Grian launched himself at me, dragging a helpless Mumbo along for the ride. I barely had time to react before I was tackled into the pile of pillows, my arms pinned by an overenthusiastic Grian and a very unamused Mumbo.

"What—! Grian—!*"

"Welcome to the nest, buddy!" Grian chirped, looking far too pleased with himself. "No one leaves."

"I swear, if you don’t let me go—"

Mumbo sighed, giving up completely. "Don’t fight it, Scar. It only makes him stronger."

I grunted, trying to wiggle out, but Grian clung to me like a determined barnacle. "You absolute menace."

"You love me," he shot back, cheekily bumping his forehead against mine.

"I tolerate you," I corrected, but my grin betrayed me.

Before he could retaliate, a sharp crackle cut through the room, followed by a voice breaking through my radio.

"All available heroes, we have a major situation downtown. Structural collapse in progress. Immediate assistance required."

The playful energy in the room evaporated instantly. I was already moving before the message fully registered, pushing myself up despite Grian’s grip.

"Scar—"

"I have to go," I said firmly, grabbing my gear and checking my communicator. "Stay here and rest, Grian. You’re not cleared for action yet."

"Like hell I’m staying behind," he shot back, already shaking out his wings. "I can still help."

"You just got out of the hospital," Mumbo pointed out, trying to grab his wrist. "Maybe sit this one out?"

Grian scoffed, shaking him off. "I’ll be careful."

"Famous last words," I muttered, throwing on my utility belt. "Fine. Just stay close, okay?"

Grian smirked, flexing his wings as he stretched. "No promises."

Mumbo groaned. "Why do I even bother?"

With that, we were off, the nest abandoned in favor of a new kind of chaos—one that was far less playful and far more dangerous.

As soon as I radioed in that Cute Guy and I were on the case, the response was almost immediate.

"Hot Guy, Cute Guy, we’ve got a developing situation. Missing child, presumed kidnapped. Last known location: the old industrial district. Witnesses reported seeing someone carrying a child into one of the abandoned buildings. Your mission is to locate and retrieve the child safely and detain the suspect. Proceed with caution—unknown variables in play."

I glanced over at Grian, who was already sitting up, wings twitching with barely contained energy. His playful demeanor from earlier was gone, replaced with something much sharper, much more focused.

"Sounds easy enough," I said, but we both knew better.

"Nothing is ever easy," Grian muttered, adjusting his holsters. "Let’s move."

We left in a blur, cutting through the city streets with practiced ease. I took the lead, but Grian wasn’t far behind, his wings giving him an occasional boost to keep up. The industrial district wasn’t far, but the sinking feeling in my gut told me this wouldn’t be as straightforward as we hoped.
