The night was cold and cruel, just like how you thought of yourself at times. Soft licks of cool air flooded into your room like the ghost of a mother's tender lips.
You were asleep- but at what cost? Why must these terrible dreams invade your peace?
*
Ah, Kanae-san. A dear friend of mine.
The soft crunch of leaves beneath your feet was the only sound this morning, it was a beautiful day yet not a single bird was singing.
You didn't think much of it- they're just birds! Whatever.
You progressed, your crow flying up above you in the sky, its shadow working as a map to guide you through the foliage.
You didn't exactly know where you were going, just that all of your fellow pillars would be at the butterfly estate for whatever reason.
An informal meeting, perhaps? Or was it a friendly get together between peers?
You couldn't say, your mind was busy when the details were being discussed.
You were nearing the estate now, silently entering through its gates.
(H/C) tresses obstructed your view, the sudden gust of wind causing you to stumble slightly as you padded through the courtyard.
You could hear indistinguishable chatter, a quiet hum of familiar voices from wherever in the butterfly mansion. You decided to follow them, knowing it was best to try and be social.
You neared the voices again, eyes scanning the crowd for a certain white haired man.
Your eyes settled on Kanae, she was happily chatting away to one of your shared colleagues- though this felt weird. 'We're only peers...' you mentally scolded, bringing a hand up to cover your mouth.
Less than twenty feet away from you was Sanemi- your Sanemi! With Kanae- he's laughing, what was he laughing about?
How could he sit there and laugh and look so handsome?
*
Your eyes shot open, the first rays of sunlight flooding into your room but it was anything but peaceful.
There was that familiar feeling of sweat running down your forehead, and small tears prickling at the corners of your eyes.
You sat up slowly, holding your head with one hand as you wiped tears with the others.
"What was he laughing about? All that time ago..."
You murmured quietly, swallowing thickly.
*
Kanae was... difficult to remember. She was one of the first people to be so kind to you- so why was she suddenly invading your dreams?
You could still remember the first time you two had met, she had insisted that you call her by her first name instead of just Kocho-san.
She was kind, her voice was singsong and her hands were warm... she was so perfect. [ Kanae appreciation <33 ]
But she was gone. There was no way she would ever come back- so why was her memory only resurfacing now?
That was yet another question you failed to answer.
*
The thought was still plaguing your mind as you prepared your breakfast, drank your tea, tended to cleaning... but why?
But it wasn't healthy to dwell on one thought, you supposed. So you needed to change that.
You then remembered something crucial- Sanemis letter!!!
You padded into your bedroom, pulling a small table away from the wall and kneeling down in front of it. You took a sheet of paper and tub of ink out from its compartment and placing them on the shiny wooden top.
You dipped your pen into the ink and started to write, making sure every character was formed just perfectly. Everything had to be perfect, just for him.
*
'Dear Shinazugawa, Thank you for the invite, and yes, I would love to accompany you to a festival. Now I don't mean to intrude, but would you like to spar again someday? Your swordsmanship is truly admirable, and I am very inclined to learn more from you.
- sincerely, (y/n) (l/n)'
*
The thought of Kanae was still looming in the back of your mind as you wrote but you forced it away, it was no time to sulk.
You rolled up the letter, tying it to your crows leg with a small piece of ribbon into a bow. You pat its head gently, smoothing the birds feathers in a loving gesture.
"Mimi, please deliver this to Shinazugawas estate."
You asked in a tender tone, and quickly added on.
"Oh! And the sky seems as if it might rain, so don't rush home because I know you don't like it when your feathers get wet."
She continued with a faint smile, knowing the crow could get... vocal when its feathers were ruffled.
"Caw! Caw! Letter for Shinazugawa! Caw! Caw!"
It squawked as it took off, flapping its wings as it flew through the open shoji doors and off into the sky.
