Sanemi has come across as rude and brash his whole life, to say he was misunderstood was an understatement. He hated how his father reflected on him, he always ruined things because of that man. Though, when his mother was turn from her sweet self to a twisted and man eating demon, he kept subconsciously bringing the blame back to him.
He tries to be kind to others- or atleast not come across as 'rude'. Though it's been tough, he's lost the only friend he made, and despite his success in becoming a hashira he never felt worthy of it deep down.
He was always misunderstood, people saw him as someone he wasn't, it bugged him. He couldn't help the fact he was easily aggravated, or that he pushed everyone away from him. He became so used to people distancing themselves from him that when you came around he began to act strange.

You're a kind soul. Ever since your simple life was taken away from you as a child, you've dedicated yourself to slaying demons. You've successfully mastered your own breathing style, (style) breathing.
It brought a smile to your face to know that you were good at this breathing style, since the death of your family you've felt empty. Forever missing them, it saddened you, though that seemed to sadden everyone around you too. And you didn't want that.
So for the past years of your life you've been sure to be kind to everyone, smiling even when your body ached, even when your throat ran dry and your eyes begged for tears, you kept up your facade. Even when pushed away countless times you kept giving people chances. You knew how it felt to be outcasted.. you wouldn't wish it on anyone.
And the day you met Shinazugawa-san in your first semi-annual hashira meeting, you immediately knew he had been suffering.
You wanted his sadness to end.
