Chapter Six

Jemima has been hiding from her feelings, she had stopped thinking about her confusing emotions, she was hiding from acknowledging the problems of her relationship and just went with the flow. Two weeks after Ayo's Mum incident, he texted her to tell her the doctor said she had high blood pressure when she texted back he didn't reply and before the week of his Mum's incident, Ayo was on a plane to Dubai, he didn't bother to see her, he didn't bother to tell her before boarding the flight. He got there and a simple I'm sorry, I had to fly out to Dubai early was all he sent. At least he called when he got there and the next day he sent flowers like he had promised he was willing to show her how much he loved her, the roses were just the beginning they returned to their video calls, even with their different time zones he made an effort, every day after work she looked forward to his call, so she forgot about what their problems were and while enjoying the moment. He had listened to her rant about work, she had told him about visiting the beach with someone but she hadn't mentioned who, they had somehow found joy in their chaos. He's been there for two weeks and he wasn't coming back anytime soon according to his last text.

Their calls became inconsistent, and the switch felt like a light bulb, he didn't call for two days and called to apologize that they were onsite, another time he called to complain about Nigerian billionaires building hotels in another man's country and when he finished and she was going to talk about her day he was half minded. Her joy was cut short all of a sudden and that angered her, she would call to know when he was coming back but he would brush it away like it wasn't a necessary topic to be had. She had become so used to their on and off that it wasn't fast for her to move on with her life forgetting he was there. It hurt but anything to take her mind off him was welcomed. He called to yap about work, and she would listen while pretending to be distracted with work, he would ask about work and her two favourite sentences rolled off her tongue easily.

"Work is fine, I guess... work is tiring." She picked the sentence she loved at the moment, she mixed and matched sometimes. He didn't notice that and she did not bother to think too much about it.

She had called Dami the day before and their conversation on the phone replayed in her head. Dami has always been against them dating at the time which made Jemima more drawn to Ayo, like a magnet, they kept talking even though Dami had warned her not to. Jemima didn't date him until her fallout with Dami. Dami had been mean about the whole not dating my brother and Jemima couldn't understand it as she was already falling for the villain. One day they were arguing about something very irrelevant and Dami brought up Ayo which had upset Jemima, Dami didn't care as it hurt Jemima's pride, using something she confided in her friend against her, Jemima said her piece to, and both parties stopped talking. And years later when Jemima met Ayo again they started talking and hit it off.

"I've been great... what do I owe this call."

Jemima smiled, she was expecting it, maybe their fight was more than Jemima's involvement with Ayo she thought.

How well his attitude had changed. Like he was some type of on-and-off switch, on when he wanted to show affection and off when he wasn't interested. Jemima had decided to call Dami when Ayo's off switch was turned on and just because she was starting to have doubts. The conversation had left her thinking twice as before.

"Dami, hi... How are you doing?" The conversation had started weirdly because it had been years since she spoke to Dami, she and Dami had been Uni friends as they were roommates coincidentally twice, they had similar interests and became friends until Jemima became interested in Ayo, she didn't understand why it mattered to Dami if she dated Ayo "How's work?" Jemima asked trying to be cordial

"Get on with why you called 'cause I know it doesn't have to do with my work."

"Ahan.. that's a little harsh." Jemima could swear she heard Dami roll her eyes
