LAST CHAPTER ALERT
CHAPTER FIFTEEN
This will be the first time in four months that she will be seeing Damola. She was excited, and she couldn't contain her happiness. Other than her eagerness, her friend was radiating the same happiness as she was going through the stress of wedding planning. It had been a lot for Kamsi, but she was trying to see it through, and Jemima was being a good friend, being the best help she could be.
Life in the last four months had been bittersweet, since her break-up with Ayo. After her confession, he had reached out after weeks of not speaking to her, and she was mourning the end of her relationship. He had sent a text that bothered Jemima throughout the day, "I have had to think about it... I forgive you and I love you." She would have been happy to receive that message from Ayo, but this time it came as a bother rather than a flutter in the tummy. They had sat to talk about the revival of a dead relationship on a Saturday evening in a new spot at Victoria Island. Jemima dressed her best to make sure Ayo realized what he was missing, she wanted to also show him how great she was doing after their whole relationship, which seemed like a facade. She couldn't remember the good days anymore. He had walked in looking better than she remembered, and they sat, and the first time since she met Ayo, they had a mature, honest conversation. She still had her soft spots for him, she still cared for him, and she still saw him, but she was over it. She was over being the only one seeing and not being seen.
"Yeah... I should have done better, I fucked up... may have fucked the best thing in my life... I still like you, I know you might not, but you've been a light." Ayo said his few words, and it melted her heart. Jemima rolled in bed days after listening to Ayo pour out his heart. She had never seen him like that, and it was refreshing even if it was late. Jemima knew she was done fighting for their relationship, she knew how peaceful it felt to tell Ayo they were over and done and how happy her heart smiled. Life continued without Ayo, but also continued with Damola in the picture as a friend. He started as a supporting friend, because again, Jemima had turned him down. She wanted to focus on herself, she wanted to grow, she wanted things to be different, and she couldn't just jump into a relationship with him because it felt right. She wanted the feelings to grow, to mature into something she couldn't handle, and that's what she did, and he gave her the space she wanted.
She recollected their conversation, which they had weeks after the short breakup confession she had with Ayo. Damola had been such a sweetheart, she had been thinking of how her conversation with Ayo ended, and she dreaded the turn of it; she wanted a nice break-up up but Ayo wasn't been nice, and it went the other way. She and Damola met coincidentally that day, the ride she ordered was making a U-turn towards her when Damola stopped in front of her, she was surprised to see him because they had not said a word to each other following their last I love you confession. She got into his car after canceling her ride and tipping the driver. She was going to Kamsi's early bridal shower she had planned because her dear friend wanted one, and as the planner, she had to be there earlier than everyone.
"You look good... where are you off to?" he asked as he got on the road.
"Today's Kamsi's bridal shower."
"How come? Her wedding is still later in the year, maybe five months away or was the save the date a mix-up?"
"No, it's not.. she wanted it early... How have you been?"
"Good... I will be returning to the UK." Jemima's heart had skipped twice when he made his confession. It always surprised her when he talked about the UK, she always forgot his other life was there "I will be back, don't worry... You won't have to miss me that much." She chuckled, "How is everything?"
She knew what he was asking, and she was truthful about it as it made the situation clear "We've broken up... a week plus now."
"Are you happy?"
