CHAPTER ONE

She's seated in her living room, a two-bedroom apartment she shares with her best friend for two years. The TV is on its loudest volume but she's zoned out. Every day she's got something to think about, and she's got him to think about, he occupied a large part of her mind. He had made up another excuse for why they couldn't see like he'd been doing for the past three weeks because he was busy. She had been looking forward to the particular day they would finally see just for him to cancel seconds before he was to pick her up.

All dressed up in her short pink dress with ruffles at the bottom of the dress, her body oiled to perfection, she had taken a lot of time to prepare for the date as they hadn't gone on a date in forever. She had waited in the living room to open the door for him until she got his text Got work to do, came in late not sure we can see today... sorry. There was a pattern to his apologies and excuses she had come accustomed to, the message came in dine minute to the date, then the next day before leaving for work, there was a delivery guy at the door holding a bouquet of the most reddish roses and chocolates in a box. She used to love roses but the apology roses made her dislike them as they came and they didn't do the apology right. She's in her feelings after reading the text, she looks at herself in the reflection of the already switched-off TV, and a tear rolls down her cheek just as her best friend's key turns on the door.

She sprang to her feet and dashed into her room before Kamsi could even notice her, but she knew her best friend after living together for two years, Kamsi knew how Ayo treated her, even if she was supportive of her friend's decision she called bull when she saw one and Jemima knew She would call it if she saw her in that state but Jemima wasn't interested to argue with her best friend. Jemima locks herself in the room and changes out of her dress and shoes in seconds, slumps into her bed after cleaning her makeup and her tears start to flow all over again.

Just another evening to cry over spilled milk that everyone's been telling her about. She couldn't control the tears, her heart was broken, it was more than canceling the night she's been looking forward to. She cried so much she blocked out Kamsi's voice calling her. The apartment wasn't that big, it was a typical two-bedroom Lekki structured house, the new development kind that had the same structure with six more in a small private compound. They were among the first tenants of the house and it was the first best house, their career as a nurse in a private hospital and human resource manager at a big magazine company could afford. They could say they were living the sweet life they had dreamt of as a young girl in Lagos, the work, the affordable lifestyle, the relationship which could be debatable on Jemima's part while Kamsi was in a thriving one-year relationship which was on the part of marriage.

Jemima picked up her phone to check if there was a follow-up message from Ayo and just as she guessed, he had forgotten she existed and dived into work. Yet again she's awarded the biggest fool prize for believing he loved her like he claimed.

"Jemima!" Kamsi screamed at the top of her voice getting Jemima out of her mood. Jemima raises the duvet over her face on her bed trying to ignore Kamsi and pretends she is asleep hoping her puffy eyes won't give her away. Some minutes later Kamsi knocks on her door "I know you are inside, I heard your door close when I got in." Defeated, Jemima gets off her bed to unlock the door preparing for her friend's questions after rinsing her face with water.

"You are back early.." Jemima puts on a pretend smile hoping it masked her pain.

"Should be asking you that... thought you wouldn't come back home as today is date night with Ayo." Kamsi said watching Jemima with her microscopic eyes.

"I started to feel sick so he didn't come." Kamsi continues to watch Jemima hoping she could see the truth from her face. "Sick?" She raises her hand to Jemima's head to check her temperature while placing the other hand on hers. "You feel fine, you look it."

Jemima walks out of the room into the kitchen to pull out a bottle of water from the fridge. "Mims what's wrong?.. did he bail?"

"Bail? no! I'm not feeling too good."

"How do you expect me to believe you? You've been anticipating this date night for weeks."

"Kamsi I said he didn't bail, I'm sick."

"I find that hard to believe, you look like you've been crying. where's your phone? If that bastard bailed on you again... he should pray is life goodbye." she says as she goes in search of Jemima's phone.

"Kamsi! Kamsi!!" Jemima screams after her hoping to find her phone before Kamsi does.

"That bastard!" Kamsi scoffed after finding the phone and reading the message "Jemima... I'm going to kill this bastard. You need to let him go, he's hurting you more than he's allowed to."

"Kamsi leave it and stop calling him a bastard. You know his work is needy."

"And you are not?.. always with the excuse to back him up."

"Stop it Kamsi."

Kamsi looks at Jemima for a brief moment contemplating whether or not to continue the argument. "You know you deserve better than this." she said and walked out of Jemima's room.

Jemima falls to the ground, hugs her legs, and starts to cry again. It wasn't the first time Kamsi was saying that and It wasn't the first time she cried too much for Ayo. Relationship with him was a rollercoaster, sometimes they were happy which wasn't every time and most times Jemima was in her delusion. She knew she deserved better, someone who was present with her emotionally, someone who didn't cancel on her every time. Breaking up with him was far from her mind as she had done it so many times she was tired of thinking of it and being over with him finally made her heart break.

Jemima gets herself into bed and cry herself to sleep, crying was better than thinking of what to do, crying until there was no tears left. She knew she wasn't ready to let him go, she was still in love with him too much it hurt to be treated anyhow Ayo pleases.

How well will things be if she tells him how she wants to be treated, will he change, If he changes was he going to do it for her or for himself, will he be the best version of himself or what she wanted, will he treat her better. She didn't know the answers to all the questions that kept coming and she didn't want to think about it again as it wasn't solving the problem. She knew she loved him enough to forgive him and continue from there.
