Irina looked out to the island that sat on the horizon.
"Are you sure you'll be okay? I mean, I know you will be but really?"
Seth sighed exasperatedly. "Yes, for the millionth time."
I grinned. Irina had been having panic attacks about us going back to Tortuga for a rum stock up (most of it was drunk in a celebration of Isla's birth) even though she would be coming with us. For some reason, this seemed to be the thing that was agitating her. Though I did not know it, It was mostly mothering instincts.
The crew lowered a long boat and Irina, helped by Seth, Isla, in Irina's arms, Jack, Gibbs and I all clambered in. Jack and Gibbs rowed with Irina sitting at the front. I was at the back, holding my pistol in one hand. I wasn't going to take any chances.
We left Gibbs to mind the boat and we split up, Jack and Seth going to get rum (I tried not to think whether they would be paying someone, or whether some pirate was going to get a nasty shock when he next looked in his wine cellar.) I lead Irina to a small pub, which seemed the most appropriate for a mother and baby. Leaving Irina at a table, I went to get drinks but on hearing a conversation through a partially closed door I stopped to listen.
"Just kill the baby, there's no questions about it, they're the simplest rules you can come by," said a sharp voice.
"But dad," whined a familiar voice. "Why should I? What's so dangerous about her?"
"Are you saying that you change sides? After everything I've done for you. You know that you're on the winning side."
"Maybe I am. Why are there sides anyway? We don't have anything to be fighting for. And you know that we may not win. No one can predict the future. It's based on decisions and choices of others, you're future could be welded by someone else deciding pull a trigger."
"JUST DO IT!" yelled the sharper tone.
I heard another door slam but I still had cold feet. The only baby in Tortuga was Isla, I was sure about that. Why would they want to kill her?
Suddenly I heard a scream and what sounded like a gunshot. Pulling out my sword, I dashed back to our table, where my heart seemed to leave me. I put my hands up and dropped my sword on the floor.
"Annabelle Beckett. It's been too long..."
