I felt the my face turn white as Isla cried. I sank to my knees and picked up the baby, clutching her to me, tears spilling over my eyes. I breathed steadily, in and out, closing my eyes tight, shutting out the world, trying to disappear into my own bubble where no one else could follow. I could hear someone clattering around behind me and then a horrible scream. A scream so full of agony and despair that it sounds as though all life had been sucked out of the air around me.
"IRINA!!! No, no, no, please." Seth had dropped the rum he was holding and fell on his knees, gripping Irina's cold hand in his own. "NO!"
I could feel Jack taking Isla and pulling me up to face him.
"What happened, Lia?" spat Jack, obviously under the impression that it was my fault. I glared at him and hissed, "Beckett."
Jack's face looked for a second like he was going to kill me but then his eyes softened and he whispered, so Seth could not hear, "We'd better get them on board."
It took Jack and I ten minutes to get Seth off Irina's body; I tried to use a sword, as a threat but his only reaction to this was, "Kill me please."
When aboard the Black Pearl, we barricaded in Jack's cabin, Isla being put into a drawer which resembled a makeshift cot. Then Seth rounded on me.
"What did you do Lia? Why would you do such a thing?"
"Hang on a moment," interrupted Jack with his hands in the air. " Lia had nothing to do with this, it was your ruddy fault for bringing her with us in the first place."
"Then who did do it?" growled Seth, still glowering at me.
"Annabelle Beckett," I said. Seth's glower increased ten-forth.
"How dare you even say that name!" he hissed. "She is dead and you can't blame it on her!"
"Oh so now I can't blame it on her?" I shouted, Isla waking up and beginning to sob. "Tell me Seth, what exactly is she to you?"
"Seth, we all know what incredibly clever animals sea turtles are," put in Jack. "And Belle Beckett is not that thick, she could swim very well."
Seth sighed thickly and Jack laughed under his breath.
"What?" I hissed.
"I'm sensing Sterims ," said Jack triumphantly.
I shook my head, "Never mind that now. The point is Seth, that you don't have anyone to blame apart from the person who owns the bullet, something like this was bound to happen!"
"I hate you," said Seth quietly.
"What?" I said, raising my eyebrows.
"I hate you and that stupid baby! If it wasn't for you, Irina could be alive right now!"
"And if you hadn't conceived a child with her she definitely would be!" I shouted.
"It's all your fault!" he screamed.
"No it's not!" I shouted even louder. "If she hadn't met you then she would still be alive right now, so who's fault is it really that Irina is dead?!"
"ENOUGH!" roared Jack. "SHUT UP THE PAIR OF YOU! YOU'RE ACTING LIKE A COUPLE OF SCALLYWAGS!" I snorted at the use of the word but Seth turned on the spot and stormed out of the cabin.
"Trying to run away Seth?" I called after him. "We are on a ship you know!"
I had spoken harsh words but the fact that Seth wouldn't listen to reason was really horrible. Why would I have done that to him? And what was he hiding from us? Was Jack right in sensing sterims, or was the shock of what had happened reawaken feelings for Annabelle Beckett that should have died long ago?
