30. Puspha Ji's Retirement

A hush had enveloped the city, the darkness of midnight falling through. The occasional owl screeched breaking the eerie silence that doomed over Lucknow, the city that had retired for the night. Yet, in the darkness, a figure arose, treading over the deserted roads carrying a parcel in his hand. He was clad in complete black, merging in with the night shadows, a cap drawn in to hide his features.

He stopped near a house, opening the gate with little difficulty. He bent down and kept the parcel near the doorstep, rushing outside with great urgency.

Outside, an ear piece crackled to life as the sound of boots crunched on the ground. The man tensed, visibly aware that he was being followed, quickened his steps. He ran, sweat profusely dripping as he landed a dead alleyway, coming face to face with none other than KS.

Puspha Ji arrived behind him silently, twisting his arm around his back. The man winced in pain, KS stepping forward to remove his cap. His eyes glared, a deep crimson, staring deep at KS as he felt the cold metal slither onto his hands.

He was arrested.

The following day, Rohan arrived at the station, his eyes screaming in surprise seeing the person inside the cell.

"Vikram..." he yelled. "Why did you do this?"

"How dare you?" he spat, his words fuming. "You fired me Rohan based on incriminatory evidence. I had to take my revenge."

Rohan stepped back, the dejected look visible in his face. He left the cell, colliding face to face with Puspha Ji.

"Madam, thank you for saving my family" he said with a deep smile.

"It's my duty."

"Btw where is Karishma madam?" he asked, suddenly.

"She's in her cabin. Why?" Puspha Ji asked, arching her eyebrows.

"Can I see her?"

"Sure" she replied, half-heartedly.

He stepped inside, knocking om her door, awakening the wrath of KS at being disturbed. She looked up, her eyes widening as she stared at the approaching figure.

"Karishma..." he called out, his voice quivering.

"Karishma madam..." she corrected him, her voice blunt.

He nodded. "I wanted to thank you madam, for everything."

"We just did our duty" she said nonchalantly busying herself with her papers.

Rohan stood in front of her, contemplating his words. Hesitation crawled all over him, the past unlocking in his unsettled mind.

"Madam, I also wanted to say sorry for what happened..."

Her words hit him like a blow, but he nodded, understanding that no apology could undo the damage. With a heavy heart, he turned and walked out of the cabin.

KS watched his retreating figure, her expression softening ever so slightly. A strange sense of calm washed over her—a feeling of closure. The shadows of her past no longer loomed over her, and for the first time in a long while, she felt at peace.

A faint smile played on her lips as she leaned back in her chair, the rhythm of her work resuming. The weight she had carried for so long had finally lifted, leaving her free to focus on the present and the future.

Puspha Ji went to have a cup of tea, her eyes gazing at the MPT building, tears pricking her eyelids. She sat down, her fingers grazing the soft wooden bench, the familiarity rushing through her.
